COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's and men's track & field teams tallied nine top-10 individual finishes, highlighted by a first-place showing in the men's long jump by freshman
Deondre Hardy and nine personal-best marks on the first day of the Weems Baskin Relays hosted by the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C.
Both the men's and women's track & field teams will return to action tomorrow on day two of the Weems Baskin Relays. Events will start at 10 a.m. ET.
Women's Team
On the women's side, the Chants saw two sprinters cross the finish line in fourth and fifth place, respectively, in the 100-meters, as
Lauren Gordon placed fourth with her time of 12.13 (+0.5) and just in front of teammate
Amanda Kinloch in fifth with her time of 12.14 (+1.2). Both times were personal-best records.
In the women's long jump event, the Chants placed three in the top 10.
Mia Lewis (5.43m) placed fifth,
Nikki Boon (5.39m) finished sixth, and
Claire Spiller (5.36m) came in ninth.
The trio finished in front of
Keiran Martin (5.31m) and
Destiny St. Cyr (5.31m), who finished 11th and 12th, respectively, in the event.
CCU added a pair of top-10 showings in the throws, as Boon finished fifth in the javelin throw with a distance of 36.39 meters, while
Lauralyn Clifford placed 10th in the hammer throw with a mark of 44.52 meters.
Men's Team
The lone Chant win of the day went to Hardy, as the first-year Chant recorded a new personal-best leap of 7.26 meters in the men's long jump event to take first place overall. Fellow freshman
AJ McKay Jr. finished 13th in the men's long jump event with a mark of 6.75 meters.
In the throws events, CCU's
Aaron Keeler placed 11th overall in the men's javelin throw with a toss of 48.37 meters while the duo of
Michael Martello (42.76m) and
Killian Oberheu (40.52m) finished 21st and 26th overall in the hammer throw, respectively.
On the track, veteran
Albrey Gossett turned in a new personal-best time of 10.97 (-0.2) in the 100-meters to place sixth overall, while sophomore
Isaiah Thomas crossed the finish line in 14th in the 400-meters with his personal-best time of 49.94.
Newcomer
Adrian Nwakalor recorded a new personal-best time of 50.58 in the 400-meters to finish 23rd overall and in front of fellow Chant
DeShon Harris and his time of 51.29, good enough for 30th.
