PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University women's golf team sits in 16th place after shooting a 26-over 310 in the opening round of the Golfweek/Any Given Tuesday Intercollegiate Monday afternoon at the par-71, 6,003-yard Caledonia Golf and Fish Club.
The wet course and windy conditions made for a tough day on the course as none of the 17 teams were able to break par.
Sara Sarrion led CCU with a one-over 72 (34-38) and is tied for 12th heading into Tuesday's second round. Over her last 11 holes of the round, the sophomore shot a one-under, which included one birdie and 10 pars. She led the field with 15 pars for the round and was tied for sixth with her 4.00 scoring on the par-4's.
Luisa Gibson (38-39) and
Isabella Spinazze (36-41) finished their outings tied for 47th overall, as each shot a six-over 77.
Clare Gimpel (40-44) shot a 13-over 84 to end the day tied for 82nd, while
Isabella Galla (42-45) shot a 16-over 87 and will head into the second round in 86th.
Elan Fleetwood played as an individual player and shot an eight-over 77 (40-39) to finish the round tied for 59th.
The team scores are reflective of the challenging course conditions each team faced in Monday's round, as only 27 shots separate the 17 teams. Fellow Sun Belt Conference member James Madison leads the event after shooting a one-over 285, followed by UNCA (+6, 290). UNCG and Illinois-Chicago are tied for third after each shot an eight-over 292, while East Carolina rounds out the top-five at 14-over 298.
Evansville (+16, 300) is sixth, followed by Ohio (+17, 301). Five teams finished day one at 18-over 302 in Northern Colorado, FGCU, Akron, North Dakota State, and Morehead State.
Marshall (+20, 304) and St. Thomas (+22, 306) are both just in front of the Chants, with Western Illinois (+28, 312) two shots back of CCU.
