PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. –
Sara Sarrion of the Coastal Carolina University women's golf team won the individual championship at the Golfweek/Any Given Tuesday Intercollegiate with a five-under 208 (72-70-66) and led the Chanticleers to an eighth-place team finish with a 45-over 897 (310, 292, 295).
Sarrion entered the final round in second place at even-par but pulled even at the top of the leaderboard with two birdies in the first four holes. She then added a third birdie on the first nine holes when she sank a birdie putt on the par-5 No. 8 hole to take over the lead. She went on to add birdies on holes No. 10 and 15 to finish the round with five birdies, 13 pars, and no bogeys in Wednesday's round.
Her third-round score of 66 was not only a career-low round for the sophomore but it is tied for the sixth-lowest round in program history. Her 208 total score was also a career-best and is tied for the fourth-best in program history.
She also led the tournament in par-3 scoring with a 2.80 scoring average. Her 4.00 scoring average on the par-4 holes was tied for the tournament best and she was tied for the sixth-best par-5 scoring with a 4.83 scoring average. Sarrion finished the tournament with 10 total birdies, which was tied for the seventh-most in the event, while her 39 total pars were third overall.
Luisa Gibson finished tied for 21st with a 10-over 223 (77-74-72). She was tied for sixth in par-4 scoring with a 4.11 scoring average and her 34 pars were 21st.
Isabella Spinazze finished tied for 35th after recording a 16-over 229 (77-76-76), while
Clare Gimpel tied for 63rd with a 24-over 237 (84-72-71).
Isabella Galla shot a 43-over 256 (87-84-85) to finish 87th and
Elan Fleetwood, playing as an individual, finished 85th after scoring a 35-over 248 (79-81-88).
Fellow Sun Belt Conference member James Madison led wire-to-wire to finish well ahead of the field with a 13-over 865. UNCG (+30, 882), UNCA (+32, 884), FGCU (+34, 886), and East Carolina (+39, 891) rounded out the top five.
North Dakota State and Illinois-Chicago tied for sixth as each finished with a 42-over 894, which was just three strokes in front of the Chants (+45, 897). Morehead State (+54, 906), and Northern Colorado (+64, 916) also finished in the top 10.
Rounding out the field were Marshall and Akron, who finished tied for 11th with a 65-over 917, followed by Evansville (+69, 921), Gardner-Webb (+72, 924), St. Thomas (+76, 928), Ohio (+79,931), and Western Illinois (+86, 938).
The Chanticleers will not have much time off as they will be back in action April 3-4 at the 2023 Ironwood Invitational hosted by East Carolina at the Ironwood Country Club in Greenville, N.C.
