PEACHTREE CITY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team saw its 2023 spring season come to an end on Wednesday afternoon, as the Chanticleers suffered a 5-2 loss to the No. 9 seed Southern Miss Golden Eagles in the first round of the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Men's Tennis Championship Tournament in Peachtree City, Ga.
Looking to get on the right track, the Chanticleers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with the doubles win.
On court No. 3, the duo of
Carlos Berna Ruiz and
Ryuya Ata easily won 6-1 over USM's Alan Sanson and Pawin Jirapoomdaje before the Golden Eagles' Shamirul Shahril and Pasawee Reansuwong edged CCU's tandem of
Maj Tomac and
Guilherme Toresan 7-5 on court No. 2 to tie the doubles count up at 1-1.
Coastal's team of
Lucas Wayenburg and
Steve Mundt sealed the doubles point for the Men in Teal with a 7-8 (8-6) tiebreaker win over USM's Antoine Audrain and Saheb Sodhi on court No. 1.
However, despite tight matches in four of the six singles matches, the Chants picked up just one win as Ata scored a 6-4, 6-2 straight-set win over Olimjon Nabiev on court No. 2.
In three of the six bouts, the Chants fell in three sets.
All-Sun Belt second-team selection Berna Ruiz fell to Shahril in three sets 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 on court No. 1, Toresan suffered a 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 loss to Sodhi on court No. 4, and
Jesus Garcia was defeated in three sets 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 by Reansuwong.
The Chanticleers finished the season at 10-13 overall.
