BOONE, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team fell 73-63 to the Appalachian State Mountaineers in Boone, N.C., on Thursday evening. With the loss, the Chanticleers drop to 7-12 on the season and 1-5 in Sun Belt action, while App State improves to 9-8 overall and 3-3 in conference play with the win.
Coastal's
Alancia Ramsey finished with a game-high 20 points, while getting help from
Makaila Cange (15) as the duo were the only Chants to score in double digits. Cange was the team's leading rebounder with 16 rebounds for her sixth double-double, while Ramsey added 12 boards for her third double-double of the year.
Riley Stack finished with three blocks for the Chants. Coastal outrebounded Appalachian State 50-39 on the night.
App State was led by Faith Alston with a team-high 15 points and was helped by Taylor Lewis, Alexis Black, Chae Harris, and MaKenzie Drout with 11, 11, 10, and 10 points, respectively. Rylan Moffitt and Harris finished with a team-high eight rebounds each. The Mountaineers finished 11-of-27 from behind the arc.
Coastal's Ramsey traded baskets in the opening minutes of the first quarter as the Chanticleers trailed 9-6 with Ramsey scoring all six points for CCU. The Chants cut the lead to 9-7 after
Zaria Hurston went 1-of-2 from the free throw line before the Mountaineers took a 12-8 lead. Coastal pulled to within 13-12 just to see App State increase its lead to 19-12 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter began with the Chanticleers closing the deficit to 20-18 as Cange scored six straight points for Coastal. However, App increased its lead to 25-18 with a 5-0 spurt with 4:23 remaining in the first half. Coastal responded with a 7-0 burst, highlighted by five points by Cange, to even the score at 25-25 with 2:02 on the game clock. The Mountaineers closed the first half action with a 9-2 run to maintain a seven-point margin, 34-27, at the halftime intermission.
The third quarter opened with App State increasing its lead to 45-34 with a 11-7 surge. After a three-minute scoring drought by each team, Appalachian State closed the third quarter with a 51-38 lead with 10 minutes left to play in regulation.
The two teams traded the first 32 points of the final period as Coastal trailed 67-54 with 3:31 left to play. The Chanticleers ramped up the defensive pressure for a 9-2 run featuring five points by Ramsey to trail 69-63. The Mountaineers closed the game at the free throw line by hitting four straight for the final margin of 73-63.
Coastal Carolina will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 20, as the Chanticleers travel to Huntington, W.V. to battle the Marshall Thundering Herd. The tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
