CONWAY, S.C. – Jalyn Stout, and
Lauren Malone led the Coastal Carolina volleyball team to its fourth straight win over the College of Charleston with a 3-1 (25-15, 25-16, 22-25, 25-13) win at the HTC Center in Conway, S.C., on Tuesday evening. With the win, the Chanticleers improved to 9-13 overall, while Charleston dropped to 17-8.
Coastal Carolina wore pink and played in the "Volley for the Cure" game to raise awareness of breast cancer.
Stout finish with a match-high 15 kills, while Malone added 11 kills.
Emma Van Elslande,
Agata Lesiak, and
Emily Fowler had nine, seven, and six kills, respectively.
Ava Wallis had a season-high 23 assists to go with Stout's 18 helpers.
Defensively, CCU totaled nine blocks as
Emily Fowler stopped five kill attempts and
Dilara Unal blocked four shots. Stout stopped one attempt at the net and tallied 13 digs to record her 13th triple-double, while
Sydney Lewis added a match-high 16 digs to get the offense back on track.
College of Charleston was led by
Anna Smith, Caitlyn Callahan, and Cailyn Bolser, who had nine, seven, and seven kills, respectively, while Lauren Fowler and Emily Banitt tallied five spikes each. Hannah Scott finished with a match-high 30 assists.
The Cougars stopped nine kill attempts with Bolser, Lauren Fowler, and Banitt making three stops apiece. Scott tallied two blocks, while Tynley Smeltzer totaled a team-high 14 digs.
In the first set, the Chanticleers jumped to a 7-3 advantage, which included a pair of service aces by Wallis and Unal, before CofC battled to within one point at 8-7 with a 4-1 spurt. Coastal increased its lead to 15-9 with a 7-2 burst, ignited by an
Emily Fowler spike and capped by a service ace by Van Elslande.
After the two teams traded the next six rallies, CCU added to its lead with a 5-2 surge to lead 23-14, highlighted by kills by Malone and Van Elslande. Stout ended the set with a pair of kills to give the Chants a 1-0 match lead with a 25-15 first-set victory.
Coastal Carolina raced to an 11-3 lead to begin the second set, sparked by a kill by Lesiak and topped by a block by
Emily Fowler. Charleston narrowed the deficit to five at 15-10 with a 7-4 run before the two teams traded the next 10 points with the Chants leading 20-15. CCU used a 5-1 burst to win the second set 25-16 to lead the match 2-0.
In the third set, the Chanticleers jumped to a 6-4 lead, highlighted by kills by
Emily Fowler and Malone. The Cougars responded with six straight points to take a 10-6 lead before Coastal cut the lead to one at 10-9, led by two service aces by
Bailee Earnhardt. The two teams traded the next 23 rallies with the score remaining even at 21-21. The College of Charleston outscored the Ladies in Pink 4-1 to win the third set 25-22.
After falling behind 4-2 in the final set, the Chants took a 9-5 lead with a 7-1 surge, which included the Cougars calling both of their timeouts in the set. CofC cut the lead to two at 9-7 before CCU opened a 15-9 advantage on kills by Malone, Unal, and Stout. A 4-1 Charleston burst cut the lead to 16-13 before the Chanticleers scored the final eight points to win the set 25-13 and claim a 3-1 match victory.
Coastal Carolina will remain in Conway, S.C., as the Chanticleers will host Georgia Southern for a Sun Belt Conference battle on Friday-Saturday, Nov. 1-2. The opening serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET on Friday and 2 p.m. ET start on Saturday with both matches streaming on ESPN+.
