Women’s Soccer Downed by Georgia State in Regular Season Finale

CONWAY, S.C – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 defeat to the Georgia State Panthers in its regular season finale at the CCU Soccer Complex.

With the loss, the Chants fall to 7-6-6, 3-3-4 in the Sun Belt while Georgia State improves to 5-7-6, 4-2-4 Sun Belt.

Junior Julia Ziegenfuss came out firing for the Chants, taking shots in the 11th and 12th minutes, but they were dealt with swiftly by the Georgia State defense to hold the score at 0-0.

The Panthers' Sunniyah Tucker belted their first shot-on-goal in the 21st minute, forcing a diving save from Coastal keeper Aris Lamanna and, just three minutes later, Carmen Gutierrez kept the Chants in the match when she made a goal line clearance of her own to keep level at 0-0.

Georgia State broke through in the 29th minute when awarded a penalty kick. Sophomore Aaliyah Faddoul stepped up to the penalty spot and ripped the ball into the bottom right corner to put the Panthers up 1-0.

Stella Lawson looked to grab a late equalizer in the 44th minute when she sent a floating shot over the keeper's head, but it was snatched out of the air to end the half at 1-0.

At the end of the frame, each team took three shots apiece and CCU trailed 2-1 in corner kicks.

Georgia State doubled its lead in the 51st minute when Faddoul netted her second goal of the match off assists from Tucker and Emily Glen to make the score 2-0.

In the minute 69th minute, Georgia State's Therese Brink rattled the woodwork in an attempt to extend the Panther's lead, but the Chants were saved by mere inches.

With three minutes left on the clock, Madison Micheletti narrowed the gap to 2-1 off an assist from Tamlyn Parkes, but time ran out before Coastal could net an equalizer.

The Chants will be back in action at the 2024 Sun Belt Championship Tournament in Foley, Ala., on Nov. 4-9. CCU will take on the No. 2-seeded South Alabama in round one.
