CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's basketball won its 12th straight contest over the Charleston Southern Buccaneers with a 97-53 road win on Sunday afternoon in Charleston, S.C., at the Buccaneer Fieldhouse. The last time the Chanticleers scored 90 points was a 99-97 road win over Troy on Feb. 16, 2023.
The Chanticleers outscored the Buccaneers in all four quarters and by 10 points or more in the first three quarters with the contest well decided in the first half as CCU led 50-29 at the break. Coastal stayed hot in the second half as the Chants shot 52.5 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes, as 12 of the 13 Chanticleers scored two or more points.
Savannah Brooks and
Kristin Williams led the Coastal Carolina (2-0) offense with a game-high 13 points, while ,
Jayden Marable (12),
Emilia Tenbrock (12), and
Alancia Ramsey (11) scored in double digits.
Riley Stack,
Jaylen Ponder,
Dawson Jemerson, and
Mallory Bruce added eight, seven, six, and six points, respectively, while
Jaidyn Koerdt,
Martina Lopez, and
Dalanna Carter totaled five, two, and two points. CCU shot 50.6 percent from the floor going 40-for-79, including 13-of-31 from behind the three-point arc as seven different Chanticleers hit from long range.
Defensively, Marable, Stack, Jemerson, and Ponder grabbed eight, seven, five, and five rebounds, with Stack blocking two of the CSU shots. Williams and Brooks tallied six and five boards with Brooks swiping the ball four times. Coastal won the turnover battle, as the Chants forced 28 turnovers and turned the ball over 15 times.
Charleston Southern (0-3) was led by Tyonna Bailey (13) and Catherine Alben (10) with double-digit points, while Alaina Nettles finished with seven points for the Bucs. CSU was 21-for-63 for a 33.3 percent from the field, including 5-of-26 from three-point range.
Alben (6), Saniya Jones (6), and Keshunti Nichols (5) combined for 17 of the Charleston Southern's 37 rebounds. The Buccaneer defense blocked just three shots, as Nettles, Jones, and Nichols blocked one each.
CCU's Williams opened the scoring with a layup only to see the Buccaneers score seven unanswered before a 7-0 run by Coastal made it 9-7, highlighted by the first of three three-point jumpers by Tenbrock. After the two teams traded baskets, the Bucs took their final lead at 12-11 after an old-fashioned three-point play by Madison Adamson. The Chanticleers closed the first quarter with a 14-2 run, sparked by Tenbrock's second three-pointer and capped off by a layup by Marable.
The second quarter began with back-to-back layups by Charleston Southern's Bailey and Alben before a 16-0 burst by the Chants increased their lead to 41-18, which included two three-point jumpers by Stack and two more by Williams. The two teams went back and forth for the final 20 points of the period with CCU leading 50-29 at the halftime intermission.
Coastal Carolina increased its lead to 63-29 with a 13-0 surge to begin the third quarter, highlighted by six points by Brooks. The Buccaneers cut the deficit to 28 at 66-38 with a 9-3 spurt before the Chanticleers closed the period with a 7-0 run to lead 73-28, which included a three-pointer by Koerdt.
CCU began the final 10 minutes of regulation with a 9-0 surge for an 82-28 advantage, highlighted by three points by Ramsey. The two teams traded the next 15 points with the Chanticleers holding an 89-46 lead with 5:37 left to play. Charleston Southern would get no closer than 40 after a three-pointer by Bailey to trail 89-49. The Chants closed the game with an 8-4 run as the Buccaneers hit a three-pointer with one second left to play.
Coastal Carolina will open the home portion of the 2024-25 schedule on Wednesday, Nov. 13, as the Chanticleers will host the UNCG Spartans. The opening tip is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.
