South Alabama Knocks Off Chanticleers 3-2

Stout records her 17th triple-double of the season

MOBILE, ALA. – The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers were knocked off 3-2 (22-25, 19-25, 25-19, 25-21, 15-6) by the South Alabama Jaguars in Mobile, Ala., on Friday evening. With the loss, the Chants fell to 11-16 overall and 6-9 in Sun Belt action, while USA improved to 15-10 on the year and 11-4 in league play.
 
Coastal's Emily Fowler and Agata Lesiak led the offense with 15 kills each, while Jalyn Stout finished with 14 kills. Stout tallied a team-high 29 assists, while Ava Wallis had 19 helpers.
 
Defensively, CCU totaled nine blocks as Dilara Unal blocked five kill attempts, while Lesiak stopped four kill attempts with Lauren Malone and Fowler stopped three attempts at the net. Sydney Lewis tallied a team-high 25 digs to help the offense get back on track, while Stout (17) finished with double-digit digs, as Stout recorded her 17th triple-double of the season.
 
South Alabama was led by Sarah Gooch with a match-high 17 kills, while Maradith O'Gorman and Abryanna Cannon tallied 15 and 14 spikes, respectively. Anna Loberg finished with a match-high 48 assists.
 
The Jags stopped 14 Chanticleer kill attempts with Lillie Simons making seven stops, while Gooch and Aniston Cochran had four blocks apiece. Briana Wilson totaled a team-high 26 digs, while Cannon (15) and Loberg (14) tallied double-digit digs.
 
In the first set, the two teams traded the first 14 points with the score remaining even at 7-7 before CCU's Lesiak ignited a 6-1 burst that gave the Chanticleers a 13-8 advantage, which was capped off by the duo of Stout and Unal blocking a Jaguar kill attempt. An 8-3 run by USA evened the set at 16-16 only to see Coastal answer with a 5-1 surge to lead 21-18, which included kills by Lesiak, Fowler, and Stout. The Chants and South Alabama traded the final nine rallies with CCU claiming a 1-0 match lead with the 25-22 opening set win.
 
Coastal Carolina raced to an 8-3 lead to begin the second set, highlighted by two kills by Fowler and one each by Unal, Lesiak, and Malone (6 kills). The Chants added to their lead with a 5-2 spurt to take a 13-5 advantage, which included kills by Stout, Malone, and Emma Van Elslande (6 kills). South Alabama responded with a 6-3 run to cut the deficit to 16-11 before a 6-1 burst by CCU increased the Chants lead to 22-12, ignited by a Fowler kill and capped by another Fowler spike. Despite being outscored 7-3, the Chanticleers won the second set 25-19 to lead 2-0.
 
In the third set, the Jaguars raced to an 11-3 lead before Coastal cut the lead to four with a 6-2 run to trail 13-9, which included a pair of kills by Fowler. USA increased its lead to 23-14 with a 10-5 run before a Lesiak kill sparked a 5-2 run to drop the second set 25-19.
 
With a 2-1 match lead, the Chanticleers raced to a 13-3 lead, which included three kills by Lesiak. After a timeout by the Jaguars, South Alabama used a 7-3 run to cut the CCU lead to 16-10.  The two teams traded the next six points with Coastal leading 20-12 before the Jaguars evened the match at 2-2 with a 13-1 run to win the fourth set 25-21.
 
In the fifth and final set, South Alabama raced to a 7-2 lead before the Chanticleers cut it to 7-4 with a Lesiak kill and a USA miscue. The Jags outscored the Chants 8-2 to win the final set 15-6 and match 3-2.
 
Coastal Carolina will finish the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 15-16, in Mobile, Ala., as the Chanticleers will face South Alabama. The opening serve for Friday is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET on Saturday and will be streamed on ESPN+.
