CONWAY, S.C. – Jalyn Stout set a new NCAA record with 15 triple-doubles to lead the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers to a 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-23) win over the Georgia Southern Eagles at the HTC Center in Conway, S.C., on Saturday afternoon to sweep the weekend series. With the win, the Chants improved to 11-13 overall and 6-6 in Sun Belt action, while the Eagles dropped to 17-4 on the year and 7-3 in league play.
Coastal saw Stout finish with a match-high 16 kills, while
Emma Van Elslande and
Agata Lesiak had 10 kills each.
Ava Wallis matched her season-high with a team-high 23 assists, while Stout had 17 helpers.
Defensively, CCU totaled 11 blocks as Lesiak stopped one solo attempt and assisted on five kill attempts for six total blocks, while
Dilara Unal and
Emily Fowler stopped five attempts each at the net. Stout tallied a match-high 19 digs to record her 15th triple-double, breaking the NCAA record she set last season as a freshman.
Sydney Lewis added 14 digs to help the offense get back on track.
Georgia Southern was led by Reagan Barth's match-high 16 kills, while Paige Powers and Jillian Gray tallied 11 spikes each. Kristen Barrett finished with a match-high 46 assists.
The Eagles stopped 11 CCU kill attempts with Lydia Seymour making six stops as Barth and Maggie Sale tallied four blocks, while Gray totaled a team-high 15 digs. Ashlyn Lovett (14) and Logan Jones (13) tallied double-digit digs.
In the first set, GASO doubled up the Chants 10-5 and forced the early timeout. The two teams traded the next 12 rallies with Georgia Southern maintaining its five-point lead at 16-11. The Chanticleers narrowed the deficit to three at 17-14 with a 3-1 run, which included Fowler and Lesiak teaming up for a block.
After a 5-1 spurt by the Eagles, Coastal Carolina got as close as three at 24-21 with a 6-2 burst, sparked by a Stout kill and topped off by a Van Elslande service ace. GASO's Barth put down the final point to give the visiting Eagles a 1-0 match lead with the 25-21 opening-set win.
The two teams traded the first 18 points to remain deadlocked at 9-9 to begin set number two. After a pair of miscues by Georgia Southern, Coastal led 11-9 only to see a 4-0 run give the Eagles a 13-11 advantage. The Chanticleers evened the set 16-16 before a second 4-0 run by GASO gave the visitors a 20-17 lead.
CCU scored six straight points to go in front 22-20, highlighted by three kills by Stout. After a Georgia Southern timeout, Coastal outscored the Eagles 3-2 to claim a 25-22 second-set victory to even the match at 1-1.
In the third set, the Chanticleers took a 5-0 advantage, ignited by a GASO service error and capped off by a Van Elslande spike to force the early timeout. After the break in action, the Eagles cut the deficit in half with a 3-1 spurt before a CCU 5-1 burst increased the lead to 11-4, which included a pair of solo blocks by Fowler. The two teams traded the next eight rallies with Coastal Carolina holding a seven-point advantage at 15-8.
A 6-2 burst by the Eagles narrowed the home-standing Chanticleer lead to 17-14 before a 4-1 surge by the Ladies in Teal pushed the lead to 21-15. After a CCU miscue, Coastal tallied a second 4-1 run to take a 2-1 match lead with the 25-17 third-set win.
In the final set, Georgia Southern doubled the Chants 8-4 before a 4-0 spurt by Coastal evened the score at 8-8, highlighted by a pair of kills by Stout. GASO pushed in front 14-11 by outscoring the CCU 6-3. A second 4-0 burst by the Chanticleers put the home team in front 15-14, which included kills by Van Elslande and Lesiak.
The two teams traded the next nine points with the visiting Eagles knotting up the score at 19-19. After a kill by Stout gave the Chants the one-point lead, Coastal added a pair of points on blocks by Unal and Lesiak to lead 22-19. A 4-1 surge by the Eagles evened the set at 23-23 before a Lesiak kill and a Unal service ace ended the set at 25-23 to give the Chanticleers a 3-1 match win.
Coastal Carolina will close out the home portion of the 2024 schedule on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8-9, in Conway, S.C., as the Chanticleers host Texas State. The opening serve is scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m. ET and 2 p.m. ET on Saturday with both matches streaming on ESPN+.
