Brooks and Ramsey Scored 20 and 19 to Lead Coastal to an 82-63 Win Over Coker

Women’s basketball had four players in double-figures

CONWAY, S.C. – Savannah Brooks scored 20 points and Alancia Ramsey added 19 as Coastal Carolina pulled away in the second half to earn an 82-63 win over Coker in a non-conference game Wednesday afternoon at the HTC Center.

Brooks, a junior guard, scored all of her points in the second half to help her team open up what was a five-point lead at halftime. In all, four players scored in double figures for Coastal, which is now 5-1 this season. Ramsey, a sophomore forward, got 13 rebounds and 19 points for her first double-double of the season. Guards Jayden Marable added 16 points and Dalanna Carter had 11.

Coker had four players in double figures, led by Kristynn Knight, who had 13, and Kamari Thompson, who had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Coastal broke the game open in the third quarter when it outscored Coker 28-17 to lead by 16, at 59-43.
The Chants coasted the rest of the way, and held their largest lead of 23 points, at 82-59 in the final minute of action.

"We did not have Savannah in the first half for 14 minutes due to foul trouble and we struggled.," said Coastal head coach Kevin Pederson, following the game. "But I thought Ramsey came out super aggressive. We have challenged her and she has responded. Jayden seems to always make the right choice with the basketball in her hands. I really trust her with the ball."

The teams went back-and-forth in the first half, where there were 11 lead changes and neither team led by more than five points. Marable led the way in the early going for Coastal, when the 5-6 graduate player, scored the first four points in a 7-0 run that gave her team a 21-16 lead early in the second quarter. Ramsey, at 6-0, took over from there and scored six of her 10 first-half points in the last eight minutes of the second quarter, with her last points starting a 6-0 run that gave the Chants' a 31-26 lead at the break.

Marable and Ramsey each had 10 points to lead Coastal through two periods. Brooks, the team's leading scorer at 16 points a game, went scoreless in the first half.

Brooks got her first points on a layup and shortly thereafter hit a three-pointer that punctuated an 8-0 run that gave the Chanticleers a 12-point lead, at 41-29 just two minutes into the third quarter. She went on the score 10 points in the period and keyed the Chants with runs of 8-0 and 12-0 to put her team in front, at 57-39, late in the period.

The lead grew to 20 points when Carter made a steal and took it in for a layup, to make the score 63-43 early in the fourth quarter. The lead went to 23 points when guard Kristin Williams scored on back-to-back trips for Coastal, making it 82-59, before Coker scored the game's last four points.

Coastal shot 33-of-60 from the field (48 percent) and made 6-of-13 three-pointers in the second half after going 0-of-10 in the first two periods. Ramsey and Marable made most of their combined 14 buckets (14-of-23 FG combined) from close range, leading to 52 points in the paint for Coastal. The Chants held the rebounding advantage at 40-34. Besides Ramsey's 13 boards, Jaylen Ponder contributed five rebounds in just 13 minutes of action.
