FOLEY, Ala. – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team's season came to a close after falling to No. 3-seeded Texas State, 4-0, in the 2024 Sun Belt Women's Soccer Championship tournament semifinals on Wednesday.
This marks the first time since 2017 that the Chanticleers will conclude the season with a winning record as they post 8-7-6 record on the year.
The Bobcats wasted no time getting on the scoreboard when Lily Erb smashed a goal into the top right corner in the third minute to give Texas State a 1-0 lead.
In the sixth minute, Mady Soumare looked to extend the Bobcats' lead when she ripped a shot on goal, but
Aris Lamanna made an excellent diving save to hold the deficit at 1-0.
Texas State doubled its lead in the ninth minute when Mya Ulloa found the back of the net off an assist from Soumare to make the score 2-0.
Redshirt sophomore
Tamlyn Parkes looked to get the Chants back in the match in the 21st minute when she took aim on a freekick attempt, but her shot flew just wide to hold the score at 2-0.
Coastal dominated possession in the remaining 24 minutes of the frame but the Bobcats defense held strong, refusing to let the Chants get off a single shot.
At the end of the frame, Texas State led in 5-3 shots and 2-1 in corner kicks.
Julia Ziegenfuss had Coastal's most promising chance of the match in the 47th minute when she found herself 1-on-1 with the Bobcats' keeper, but the junior pulled her shot wide to keep the score at 2-0.
Texas State tacked on another goal in the 49th minute when Victoria Meza slotted the ball into the bottom right corner to extend the Bobcats lead to 3-0.
In the 64th minute, the Bobcats' Kaylie Smith fired a penalty kick into the top right corner to extend Texas State's lead to 4-0.
The Chants resumed play for five minutes after a two-hour rain delay before forfeiting the match due to unsafe playing conditions.
