NORFOLK, Va. – Coastal Carolina remained within striking distance for most of Wednesday night against Old Dominion, but fell victim to an untimely 8-0 run in the fourth quarter as the Chants suffered a 65-58 setback.
Arin Freeman led all scorers with 21 points while
Anaya Barney added 10 points.
Alancia Ramsey finished with nine points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Riley Stack notched five blocks and six points. CCU held a 38-30 advantage on the glass and held the Monarchs to 36 percent shooting from the field, but committed 21 turnovers in the loss.
Coastal (8-18, 2-12 SBC) trailed by four early before Barney connected on her first three-pointer and Freeman followed with a jumper in the paint to give the Chants a 9-6 lead at the 5:27 mark of the first quarter. Old Dominion (18-6, 9-4 SBC) answered with a 10-2 run to go ahead by five, but CCU fought back to cut the deficit to 17-15 at the end of the period.
The Monarchs extended their lead to 22-17 with 7:28 left in the second quarter, but Freeman and Barney combined for six consecutive points to take a 23-22 lead with 5:26 remaining before halftime. Neither team could pull away for the rest of the quarter as the margin never grew larger than three. ODU took a 32-29 lead into the locker room after a made three-pointer with 34 seconds left in the quarter.
Old Dominion opened up a five-point lead again early in the third quarter, but the Chants responded immediately with a Barney three-pointer and a Freeman layup to knot the score at 36-36 with 6:35 to go in the stanza. The teams battled to three more ties over the final six minutes of the third before the Monarchs closed the quarter with four consecutive points to go up 46-42.
Coastal used a pair of layups from
Dalanna Carter and Freeman to stay within two in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, but ODU answered with an 8-0 run to make the score 56-46 with 5:15 left in the game. The Chants pulled back within seven on a pair of Carter free throws, but the Monarchs responded with a three to push the lead back to double digits with 3:15 remaining. Coastal could not pull closer than six the rest of the way as ODU held on for a 65-58 victory.
Coastal Carolina travels to James Madison on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. tipoff.
