CONWAY, S.C. –
Josh O'Neill pitched 5.0 innings for the No. 20 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (6-2) to take down the No. 21 Campbell Fighting Camels at Springs Brooks Stadium in a midweek matchup of nationally-ranked programs.
O'Neill earned his first victory as a Chanticleer as he allowed just two hits and one run with four strikeouts and no walks in his second start for CCU.
The Camels' Cole Peschl (0-1) took the loss for the visitors after allowing three runs on three hits over 3.1 innings.
Both pitchers matched each other through the first three innings. Neither allowed a hit as the only runner to reach base came via an error by Campbell
The Fighting Camels led off the top of the fourth with an infield single before O'Neill settled down to get the next three outs. Coastal opened the scoring as sophomore second baseman
Blake Barthol led off the home half with a solo blast into the visitor's bullpen to give CCU a 1-0 lead.
Derek Bender and
Zack Beach followed with back-to-back walks before
Graham Brown loaded the bases with an infield single.
Jake Books, the reigning Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week, stepped to the plate and doubled to left field to put the Chants up 3-0.
The Camels jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth as Chandler Riley hit a line drive down the right field line to clear the fence and make the score 3-1. Coastal added three more in the bottom of the fifth, with a
Caden Bodine single scoring
Sam Antonacci, which was followed by a two-run home run by Beach to extend the lead to 6-1.
Campbell added its final run in the top of the sixth with a home run by Reed Stallman to cut the Camels' deficit to 6-2.
The Men in Teal would score the final three runs of the game in the seventh and eighth innings with Bender adding a two-run RBI double and Bodine getting caught in a rundown long enough for Antonacci to score for the final 9-2 margin.
