COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina beach volleyball team fell in both matches on day one of the Wheeler Beach Bash, dropping a pair of 3-2 decisions to UNCW and South Carolina
The two losses dropped Coastal to 2-4 overall on the season.
Match 1: UNCW 3, Coastal Carolina 2
Coastal opened the day against the Seahawks of UNCW. After falling behind 1-0,
Denisse Morgenstern and
Madie Lichty notched a 21-10, 21-17 win at the No. 5 flight to even the score. However, a straight-set win at No. 1 and a three-set rally victory at No. 3 gave the Seahawks a 3-1 lead and the match.
Julia Blazek and
Emma Plutnicki closed the match with a 21-15, 13-21, 15-13 win on court two.
Match 2: South Carolina 3, Coastal Carolina 2
The Sandy Chants suffered another close setback in the evening, falling 3-2 to South Carolina for the second consecutive season. Trailing 2-0, Coastal put together a furious rally as
Martine Kragholm and
Sarah Riedell earned the Chants' first point with a 21-17, 21-15 win on court one. The No. 2 and No. 3 flights both went to third sets with the Gamecocks winning on court two just moments before
Emma Kunaus and
Ellie Hanford picked up a 17-21, 21-18, 15-11 win at the No. 3 flight.
Coastal returns to the sand on Sunday to face Chattanooga at 9:00 a.m. and College of Charleston at 1:00 p.m.
