MONROE, LA. –
Cameron Flukey scattered four hits and
Blake Barthol,
Caden Bodine, and
Graham Brown all homered as the No. 19 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers clinched the Sun Belt series over the ULM Warhawks with a 9-0 win in Monroe, La.
After going down in order to start the game, Coastal (20-7, 5-4 SBC) worked around a leadoff single by ULM's Bryce Blaser with Flukey (5.0 IP, 4Hs, BB, 8Ks) striking out the final two batters after a ground out to second.
The Chants jumped on the scoreboard first in the top of the second after a two-out RBI single to left field by
Dean Mihos (2-for-4, RBI) to plate Brown gave CCU a 1-0 lead. Brown (2-for-5, HR 2Rs, RBI) reached on an infield single before advancing to second on a walk by
Jake Books.
Coastal's Flukey faced the minimum in the second with the help of an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play and allowed leadoff hitters to reach in each of the next two innings before closing the door on the Warhawks with four strikeouts.
In the fifth inning, Flukey started the inning with a strikeout before working around a one-out walk to end the inning with his eighth strikeout.
CCU's Barthol increased the Chants lead to 2-0 with his 14th home run of the season in the top of the sixth. In the home half of the frame,
Hayden Johnson came in to relieve Flukey on the mound to get the Warhawks in order with a pair of strikeouts.
After a scoreless seventh inning, Coastal broke open the game as
Sebastian Alexander singled up the middle and advanced to third on a throwing error by ULM (14-14, 3-6 SBC) while stealing second.
Sam Antonacci (2-for-3, BB, R) reached base safely for the 26th consecutive game on a hit by a pitch.
Derek Bender (1-for-5, R) hit into a 4-6-3 double play to score Alexander from third to make the score 3-0. Barthol kept the inning alive with a double down the right-field line before scoring on Bodine's homer to right field.
Zack Beach followed with a single up the middle with Brown plating him on the second two-run blast of the inning for a 7-0 lead after eight.
The Chanticleers added a pair of runs in the top final inning, Antonacci led off the inning with a single to left before advancing to third on a single to right by Bender, who extended his hitting streak to 16 games. Antonacci scored on Barthol's single up the middle with Bender moving to third and scoring the final run on a sacrifice fly by Bodine for the final margin of 9-0.
ULM's led off the ninth with the leadoff hitter reaching on a Chanticleer fielding error. CCU went to the bullpen and brought in
Trevor Hinkel who gave up a single to put runners on first and second before getting the final three outs of the game.
The Warhawks Menard (0-2) took the loss, going 4.1 innings, giving up one run on three hits with three strikeouts.
Coastal Carolina will wrap up its road trip of the season on Tuesday, April 2, in Wilmington, N.C., with a meeting against the UNCW Seahawks. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET and will be streamed on FloBaseball.
