PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team saw its season come to an end in the second round of the Hercules Tires Sun Belt Women's Basketball Championship on Wednesday night as the Chanticleers fell to Southern Miss, 70-53.
Arin Freeman finished with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Makaila Cange notched 12 points and nine boards. Freeman also recorded a team-high three steals and Deaja Richardson tallied 10 points.
A put-back from Alancia Ramsey gave the Chants an early 8-4 lead at the 6:03 mark of the first quarter, but Southern Miss closed the quarter on a 12-6 run to take a 16-14 lead at the end of the period.
Coastal netted the first four points of the second quarter as Riley Stack's three pointer with 8:42 left in the half put the Chanticleers up 18-16. However, the Golden Eagles reclaimed the lead with 7:48 left in the quarter and never trailed again. Southern Miss embarked on a 10-0 run to move ahead 26-18 with 4:31 on the clock. Dalanna Carter responded with six consecutive points to pull CCU within two, but Southern Miss scored seven of the final nine points in the half to go into intermission up 33-26.
USM opened the third quarter on a 10-2 run and the Chanticleers were never able to pull within single digits for the remainder of the evening.
Coastal held Southern Miss to just 2-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc, but the Chants were out-rebounded 47-37 and outscored 48-22 in the paint.
Coastal Carolina won four of its final six games, its best finish to a season since winning 10 of its final 11 games to conclude the 2019-20 campaign.
