Women's Golf in Sixth After First Round at the Sun Belt Conference Championship

Karg is tied for the lead

 
POINT CLEAR, Ala. – The Coastal Carolina University women's golf team sits in sixth place at the Sun Belt Conference Championship after shooting a six-over 294 Monday, at the Lakewood Golf Club in Point Clear, Ala.
 
The Chants started the championship with a two-under on the opening nine holes, but did not have quite the success on the back nine, finishing with an eight-over score. A strength for the Chants was its play on the par 5s, as CCU shot six-under on the long holes.
 
Hannah Karg led the Chanticleers on the opening day of action carding five birdies and only two bogeys on her way to a three-under 69 (33-36) on her opening round and is tied for the lead. Her opening nine holes consisted of three birdies while she had her two bogeys and two birdies on the last nine holes of the day.
 
Karg is tied for eighth in par 3 scoring with a 3.00 scoring average and her 3.90 scoring average on the par 4 holes is tied for second. She is also tied for fifth in par 5 scoring with a 4.50 scoring average, while her five birdies are tied for first.
 
Sara Sarrion had an up-and-down round that started with an eagle-three on the par 5 first hole. She went on to shoot a four-under 32 on the front nine. She had some trouble down the stretch and finished with an even-par 72 (32-40) and is tied for 12th entering the second round.
 
She is tied for 10th in par 4 scoring with a 4.00 scoring average and helped by her eagle, she is second in par 5 scoring with a 4.25 scoring average, while her four birdies are tied for eight and she is tied for second with one eagle.
 
Luisa Gibson had a solid round for the Chants, but it did not start that way. She would go three-over on the first two holes of the event, but over her final 16 holes she would go one-under to finish the round with a two-over 74 (38-36) and is tied for 24th. She is tied for eighth in par 3 scoring with her 3.00 scoring average.
 
Carolina Hortian finished her round tied for 47th after carding a seven-over 79 (39-40) in the first round, and Varatkarn Kunkaew shot a nine-over 81 (41-40) to finish tied for 56th.
 
ULM (-4, 284) and Texas State (-1, 287) were the only teams to shoot under par in Monday's opening round. Georgia Southern is third with an even-par 288, while Old Dominion (+2, 290) is fourth and Southern Miss (+3, 291) is fifth.
 
CCU (+6, 294) is only three shots behind Southern Miss and is three strokes in front of James Madison (+9, 297). Georgia State (+10, 298) is eighth, while Arkansas State (+13, 301) and Marshall (+13, 301) are tied for ninth. The rest of the field includes Troy (+20, 308), Appalachian State (+28, 316), and South Alabama (+51, 339).
