CONWAY, S.C. – The No. 13 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers were beaten by Troy, 15-3 in seven innings on Sunday afternoon in the series finale of a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at Springs Brooks Stadium as the Trojans completed the sweep. The Chants dropped their fifth straight game, the first time they have lost five straight since the 2014 season.
Coastal Carolina honored its 12 seniors before the first pitch.
Troy (31-14, 14-7 Sun Belt) took the lead in the top of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead after a lead-off walk by Brooks Bryan. Bryan advanced to second on a passed ball before scoring on a ground out by Kyle Mock. The Chanticleers (27-17, 11-10 Sun Belt) threatened in the bottom half of the frame off Trojan starter Grayson Stewart (2-2) as
Blake Barthol and
Derek Bender hit back-to-back one-out singles to put runners on first and second, but were unable to do any damage.
In the third inning, the Trojans' Kole Myers put the visitors up 2-0 with a lead-off home run to right field off Coastal starter Bryson Shaffer (1-4), who took the loss. CCU answered in the bottom of the inning as
Ty Dooley led off with a walk and
Sebastian Alexander singled through the right side to put runners on first and third. Dooley scored on a wild pitch with Alexander moved into scoring position to make the score 2-1.
Troy scored four runs in the top of the fourth to take a 6-1 lead on a hit-by-pitch and an RBI single up the middle by Peyton Watts. Watts stole second before Ethan Kavanagh reached by getting hit and both scored on the three-run home run to left field by Will Butcher.
The Trojans put the game away at 15-1 with a nine-run sixth inning as the first eight batters reached before an out was recorded. Coastal's
Cameron Sebuck hit a two-out double to left before
Walker Mitchell plated Sebuck with an RBI single to left to make the score 15-2.
The Chants'
Anthony Galason hit a one-out double down the left field line before
Dean Mihos, Alexander, and
Corey Zientek all walked to score Galason for the final margin of 15-3.
The Chanticleers will travel to Southern Miss for a three-game SBC series beginning on Friday, May 3, with the first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and can be heard on WRNN 99.5 Hot Talk.
