CONWAY, S.C. –
Cameron Flukey pitched 5.0 innings of shutout baseball to lead the No. 20 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers to a 10-0 run-rule win in the rubber game of the three-game series versus Old Dominion on Sunday afternoon to clinch the series 2-1.
CCU's Flukey (2-1, 5.0IP, 3Hs, 0R, BB, 8Ks) earned his second win in three starts as the freshman opened the game with two quick strikeouts before allowing a two-out single to ODU's Luke Waters before striking out the side. The Chanticleers (21-9, 7-5 SBC) threatened in the home half of the frame but were unable to capitalize on a pair of walks to
Sam Antonacci (1-for-1, 3BBs, 2Rs, RBI) and
Derek Bender (1-for-2, 2BBs, R, 2RBIs).
ODU opened the second inning with a lead-off walk by Alex Bouche before Coastal's Flukey tallied two more strikeouts to end the inning with no damage. The Chants once again put the first two batters on base on back-to-back singles by
Graham Brown and
Chad Born. Both advanced to scoring position on a
Dean Mihos (1-for-2, R) sacrifice bunt before Antonacci drew a four-pitch two-out walk to load the bases and Bender followed with his first walk of the game to score Brown from third.
Blake Barthol (1-for-4, 2RBIs) singled to right field to score Born and Antonacci to put Coastal up 3-0 at the end of the second inning.
The Monarchs went down quietly in the top of the third on three groundouts. Coastal opened the home half of the third with back-to-back walks to
Zack Beach and Brown and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Born. CCU's Mihos plated Beach and put runners on the corners. Mihos quickly stole second to get into scoring position and Brown scored
Ty Barrango's sacrifice fly. Antonacci followed with an RBI single to right to score Mihos to give the home team a 7-0 lead.
Old Dominion's Kenny Levari and Evan Holman singled in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively.
CCU's
Henry Weycker took the mound in the top of the sixth inning, working two scoreless innings with no hits and no runs with one strikeout. Coastal tacked on a run on an RBI single to right field to Bender to score Antonacci to make the score 8-0.
The Monarchs went down in order in both the top of the seventh and eighth innings, before the Chanticleers ended the game early by run rule on a pair of miscues by the ODU outfield.
Corey Zientek led off the home half of the eight with a three-base error to right field before scoring on pinch hitter
Jake Books' sacrifice fly.
Ty Dooley reached first via hit by a pitch and moved to second as Antonacci was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Pinch hitter
Bobby Atkinson plated the walk-off run with a deep ball to left field that was dropped and allowed Dooley to score for the 10-0 run-rule win.
ODU's Dylan Brown (1-3) worked 1.2 innings, allowing four runs on three hits with four walks.
Coastal Carolina will return to the road for a midweek matchup with No. 21 Wake Forest on Tuesday, April 9 in Winston Salem, N.C. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.
