Women’s Soccer Tops Davidson, 3-1

Box Score

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team topped the Davidson Wildcats, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at the CCU Soccer Complex.

With the win, the Chants improve to 4-3-2 on the season while Davidson drops to 4-2-2.

In the opening 25 minutes of action, the Chants put pressure on the Davidson defense, taking eight shots and forcing two saves, while denying the Wildcats a single shot.

The Chants finally broke through in the 27th minute when Eleanor Ashton fed the ball to Jessica Wheeler who knocked the ball to Tamlyn Parkes. Parkes then buried the ball into the bottom right corner to tally her third goal of the year and put Coastal up 1-0.

At the end of the first frame, CCU outshot the Wildcats 12-0 and dominated with 80% possession.

CCU doubled its lead in the 63rd minute when Silje Nilsen whipped in a corner kick to the head of Madison Micheletti, who netted her first goal of the season to put CCU up 2-0.

Coastal continued to build on its momentum in the 76th minute when freshman Olivia Goretski drew a penalty kick. Parkes then stepped up to the spot and drilled the ball into the bottom left corner to make the score 3-0.

With two minutes left in the match, the Wildcats got on the scoreboard when SJ Pak found the back of the net off assists from Sophia Whiddon and Brooke Roumy, but Coastal was still able to secure the 3-1 win.

"I'm really happy to get a deserving result from the match today. I thought we started the game really well; we knew this was going to be important as after scouting Davidson, they begin games with incredible intensity,so we challenged the girls to start the game well today and they did," stated head coach Jo Chubb.

"I thought we could have and should have had a little more of a convincing lead going into the second half so the challenge at half time was to increase the intensity again and be a little more clinical in front of goal," Chubb continued. "As pleasing as it was to score from a couple of set pieces and our first attacking corner of the season, it was equally disappointing to give up the clean sheet and concede from a set piece late on. It's an area of the game we take great pride in, and we have to be able to see out games more successfully than we have recently. Conference play is a different ball game with teams capable of punishing us if we take our foot off the gas for just a second."

"I'm excited to give the girls a well-earned extended rest going into the start of conference play this week before we go back to work to plan for one of our biggest tests so far."

The Chanticleers will head back on the road to open conference play versus Old Dominion on Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. ET.
