Chants Battle to a Tie Versus Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. - The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 tie in its Sun Belt Conference opener against Old Dominion on Friday evening in Norfolk, Va.

With the tie, the Chants are 4-3-3, 0-0-1 on the season while the back-to-back reigning SBC Tournament champions ODU post a 5-3-1, 0-0-1 record on the year.

Madison Micheletti took Coastal's lone shot of the opening frame in the 14th minute, but she couldn't find the target to keep the score at 0-0.

The Monarchs had their most promising attempt in the 38th minute when Makayla Jaffe found the back of the net, however, her goal was disallowed on an offside call to hold the score at 0-0.

At the end of the first half, ODU led 14-1 and 5-1 in corner kicks.

In the first 25 minutes of the second frame, the Monarch's dominated possession and outshot CCU, 6-0, however, the Chants' defense held strong to hold ODU at bay.

In the 70th minute, Coastal looked to take the lead when Julia Ziegenfuss drove down the pitch on a counter-attack and fed the ball to Tamlyn Parkes, but the redshirt sophomore fired her shot just wide of the mark to keep the score even at 0-0.

The Chants continued to build on this momentum in the 71st minute when Parkes crossed the ball into Olivia Goretski whose shot was saved. The rebound then fell to the feet of Ziegenfuss who tapped the ball into the bottom right corner to give Coastal a 1-0 lead.

The Monarch's equalized in the 83rd minute when Yulia Khrystiuk whipped the ball into the back post to find the outstretched foot of Brooke Edwards who was able to poke the ball into the back of the net to make the score 1-1.

Old Dominion took two more shots in the remaining seven minutes of the match, but Coastal keeper Vivienne Carr made two crucial saves to match her career-high 10 saves while securing the 1-1 tie.

The Chants will return home to face the James Madison Dukes on Sept. 26 at the CCU Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.
