Volleyball Falls 3-2 in Five Sets to Cavaliers

Coastal will host Gardner-Webb on Thursday, Sept. 12

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Coastal Carolina fell 3-2 to the University of Virginia (UVA) in the final match of the Cavalier Classic in Charlottesville, Va., on Saturday evening, as the Cavaliers needed five sets to pick up the win. With the loss, the Chanticleers drop to 2-4 overall, while the Cavaliers improve to 5-1 on the season with the win.
 
The Chanticleers' offense was paced by Agata Lesiak with 19 kills, while Jalyn Stout notched 16 kills and Emily Fowler added 11 spikes. Cagla Bengi tallied a team-high 26 assists with Stout helping 24 kills to pace the offense.
 
Defensively, Coastal stopped nine shots as Dilara Unal totaled six blocks and Lesiak added four stops at the net. Sydney Lewis (19), Stout (17), and Bailee Earnhardt (12) combined for 48 of the Chants' 71 digs, as Stout recorded her third triple-double of the season.
 
Virginia's Lauryn Bowie finished with a team-high 14 kills with Brooklyn Borum, Abby Tadder, and Elayna Duprey adding 13, 11, and 11 kills, respectively. Ashley Le tallied a match-high 28 assists with Zoey Dood adding 17 assists.
 
As a unit, the Cavaliers stopped 13 kill attempts with Borum and Tadder totaling six blocks each on the defensive side. Milan Gomillion and Kate Johnson started the offense with 15 and 11 digs, respectively.
 
UVA opened a 4-1 lead before the Chants used a 4-0 spurt to take a 5-4 lead, highlighted by a kill by Lesiak. Virginia answered with three straight points to retake the lead at 7-5 before CCU evened the score at 7-7 with two quick points.
 
The two squads traded the next eight points to remain deadlocked at 11-11 before Coastal Carolina took a 15-14 lead, sparked by a pair of kills by Fowler and a Bengi service ace. The Cavaliers jumped back to the lead at 22-19 with an 8-4 surge before the Chants closed the deficit to one at 23-22 on a pair of unforced errors. UVA claimed the first set with back-to-back kills by Dean and Lauryn Bowie
 
In the second set, the Chanticleers raced to a 5-3 lead, including kills by Lesiak and Stout only to see the Hoos answer with three unanswered points to take a 6-5 lead. Coastal responded with a 5-2 burst for a 10-8 advantage, ignited by three kills by Stout. Virginia rebounded with two quick points to even the set at 10-10 before CCU opened a 15-12 lead at the media break.
 
Virginia evened the set at 16-16 with a 4-1 spurt only to see the Chants surge ahead at 20-16 with four miscues by the Cavaliers. The two teams traded the next 10 points as Coastal evened the match at 1-1 with the 25-21 second-set win.
 
The third set began with the first 20 points split between the two squads before the Chanticleers pushed in front at 12-10 on kills by Lesiak and Fowler. After trading the next seven points, CCU forced UVA to take a timeout with a 3-0 burst to lead 18-14, highlighted by a Fowler kill. The Cavaliers narrowed the deficit to one at 20-19 only to see the Chants score the final five points including three kills by Stout to claim the third set at 25-19 and lead the match 2-1.
 
The University of Virginia raced to a 7-3 advantage to begin the fourth set only to see Coastal Carolina respond with a 6-2 run to even the score at 9-9, sparked by a Lauren Malone kill and capped by a Malone block. UVA took command of the set with a 10-3 surge that included the media break and the Chanticleers calling both timeouts. After the break, the Cavaliers outscored Coastal 6-3 to even the match at 2-2 with the 25-15 fourth-set victory.
 
In the fifth and deciding set, Virginia raced to a 10-4 lead before Coastal battled back to cut the deficit to one at 14-13 with a 9-4 burst, highlighted by three kills by Lesiak. UVA scored the final point for the 15-13 win to give the host squad a 3-2 match win.
 
Coastal Carolina will begin the home portion of its schedule on Thursday, Sept. 12 for a meeting with Gardner-Webb in Conway, S.C. The opening serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.
