Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Williams leads Coastal women past Marshall, 76-64

Conway, S.C. – Kristin Williams scored 19 points to lead four players in double figures as Coastal Carolina pulled away for a 76-64 win over Marshall in a Sun Belt conference women's basketball game Wednesday night at the HTC Center.

Williams hit for her 19 points on 6-of-11 shooting and hit some important shots to help Coastal improve to 14-6 overall and 5-5 in the Sun Belt. It also snapped a three-game losing streak. Williams was supported by Mallory Bruce, who had 12 points, and Jayden Marable, who had 11. Alancia Ramsey shook over early foul trouble to collect a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. She had eight points and all 10 of her rebounds in the second half. Savannah Brooks, the team's leading scorer at 15 points a game, went scoreless in the last two periods and finished with just 6 points. But she contributed five rebounds and led her team with four steals

Williams hit a three-pointer to give Coastal a 19-point lead in the third quarter, and later hit another three-pointer to halt a Marshall run in the fourth quarter after the Thundering Herd had pulled to within nine, at 60-51, with 7 minutes left in the contest.

"Kris is a very talented player and she gave us the big buckets we needed tonight," said Coastal head coach Kevin Pederson. "She looks for that big shot and she's a fun player to coach. I can't say enough good things about her."

Marshall got 20 points from Meredith Maier, but it wasn't enough to keep Marshall from slipping to 6-15 overall and 1-9 in the league.

Coastal used its powerful inside game and points off turnovers to collect 50 of its 76 points in the paint. Conversely, Marshall got more than half of its points from three-point shooting.

Marshall made 7-of-12 three-point attempts in the first quarter, while Coastal countered with nine layups to keep the score tied at 21-21. Coastal then used three more layups and a three-pointer from Williams to cap a 9-0 run and that put the Chanticleers in front 33-23 midway through the second period. They finished the quarter with eight more consecutive points to take full control, leading 41-28 lead at the half.

Coastal completed the first two quarters hitting 19-of-28 shots (68 percent), with all but three of the buckets coming from close range. Williams and Bruce each had 10 points at the halfway mark. The two were a combined 9-of-12 from the field, with Bruce making all five of her attempts, while Williams had two of the team's three baskets from beyond the arc.

Another three-pointer by Williams gave the Chants their largest lead of the evening, at 50-31 (19 points) early in the third period. Coastal finished hitting on a lofty 60 percent of its field goals (31-of-52). The Chants also won the rebounding score, 33-30.

Coastal will be back at the HTC Center on Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest against Louisiana, and from this point forward, the Chanticleers will close the regular season with six home games in the last nine contests.
