Hot Start, Timely Finish Lead MBB Over Winthrop

CONWAY, S.C. — Coastal Carolina hit 12 three-pointers and dominated the glass to earn a 72-66 win over in-state rival Winthrop on Tuesday night at the HTC Center.

The Chanticleers (2-1) led 37-30 at halftime after a red-hot opening stretch that featured four early three-pointers to build a 12-0 lead in the first three minutes. Winthrop (1-2) fought back behind the inside play of Logan Duncomb, trimming the margin to single digits midway through the half, but Coastal maintained its edge behind the perimeter shooting of Joshua Beadle and Rasheed Jones, who made three threes each before halftime.

After the break, the Eagles opened on a 9-2 run — capped by a Kareem Rozier three-pointer — to cut the lead to 39-38 with just over 16 minutes remaining. Coastal answered immediately with a 10-2 burst keyed by Reggie Hill's three-pointer and a pair of transition baskets from Beadle, stretching the advantage to 49-40.

Winthrop again closed within three, 69-66, with 47 seconds remaining, but AJ Dancler grabbed an offensive rebound and made the second of two free throws with 15.1 ticks left on the clock to make it a two-possession game.

The Eagles turned the ball over on the next play and then fouled Jones who calmly sank a pair of free throws with eight seconds left.

Beadle led Coastal with 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting, including 3-for-4 from beyond the arc. Jones added 20 points and four assists, while Hill contributed 11 points, four rebounds, and two steals. Jerry Ngopot provided a spark off the bench with eight rebounds and a key block.

The Chanticleers shot 45 percent from the field and 46 percent (12-of-26) from three-point range while holding a commanding 45-28 advantage on the boards.

Winthrop was led by Duncomb's 21-point, 13-rebound double-double, and Daylen Berry's 20 points.

The Chanticleers return to action Friday, Nov. 14, at Jacksonville State. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
