Free Passes Haunt Baseball In 9-2 JAX Classic Loss

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Alabama made the most of Coastal Carolina's miscues, scoring nine runs on just three hits to defeat the Chanticleers 9-2 in Game 2 of the JAX College Baseball Classic on Friday night at VyStar Ballpark.

Despite being outhit 5-3, the Crimson Tide (6-0) capitalized on 12 walks, three Coastal Carolina errors, a passed ball and a wild pitch to remain unbeaten. A five-run fifth inning proved decisive as Alabama sent 10 batters to the plate, aided by two walks, a hit-by-pitch and a key two-run single by Caden Norton.

Coastal Carolina (4-2) struggled defensively and on the mound, using five pitchers who combined for 12 walks and three hit batters. Starter Cullen McKay (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) over four innings while striking out six.

The Chanticleers briefly tied the game 1-1 in the second inning when Ty Barrango grounded out to second, scoring Jake Books. Coastal's only other run came in the seventh when Kaleb Huffman's infield single plated Dean Mihos.

Alabama's bullpen, led by winning pitcher Luke Fay (1-0), held Coastal scoreless over the final 4 2/3 innings, allowing just three hits and striking out eight.
