SAN MARCOS, Texas — No. 21 Coastal Carolina was stymied by Texas State pitching in a 1-0 loss on Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Ballpark, as the Chanticleers were shut out for just the second time this season.
The Bobcats (12-14, 4-4 Sun Belt) scratched across the game's only run in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI single by Chase Mora, breaking a scoreless tie and handing the Chanticleers (19-8, 5-3) their third conference loss.
Texas State starter Jesus Tovar and relievers Matthew Tippie and Carson Laws combined to hold Coastal to just three hits while striking out 11. Tovar worked seven strong innings, scattering three hits and three walks with six strikeouts. Tippie (2-0) earned the win with a clean eighth, and Laws notched his sixth save with a dominant ninth, striking out the side.
Coastal starter
Cameron Flukey (2-1) was equally impressive, striking out eight and walking none over 7.1 innings while allowing just five hits. He was charged with the lone run after Dawson Park led off the eighth with a single and eventually scored on Mora's two-out base knock off reliever
Dominick Carbone.
The Chants had chances to break through early, stranding the bases loaded in the fourth and leaving a runner on third in the sixth. Coastal finished 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
Notebook:
- Stellar Start Spoiled: Cameron Flukey's 100-pitch gem marked his longest outing of the season and lowered his ERA to 2.84, but he took the loss due to lack of run support.
- Offensive Freeze: Coastal managed just three singles—one each from Caden Bodine, Colby Thorndyke, and Wells Sykes—and struck out 11 times.
- Scoreless Trend: The 1-0 defeat marked the second time Coastal has been shut out in 2025. The Chants were also blanked in a 7-0 loss at ECU on March 7.
- Clutch Eludes Chants: Coastal had runners in scoring position in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th innings, but Texas State turned a double play and struck out key batters to escape.
- Next Up: The Chants and Bobcats wrap the series Sunday at Noon ET.
