No. 21 Baseball Grinds Out 6-5 Friday Win

ATLANTA — No. 21 Coastal Carolina used a four-run fourth inning and clutch late-inning relief work to edge Georgia State 6-5 in a Sun Belt Conference matchup Friday night at the GSU Baseball Complex.

Sebastian Alexander's grand-slam home run capped the pivotal frame and gave the Chanticleers (25-9, 9-4 SBC) a lead they would not relinquish. Ryan Lynch recorded the final seven outs for his first save of the season, striking out four and retiring all seven batters he faced to secure the win.

The Chanticleers struck early, scoring in the first on a wild pitch after Blake Barthol led off with a double. Georgia State (22-14, 8-5) countered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, highlighted by Kaleb Freeman's RBI triple.

The Panthers added a solo home run by Colin Hynek in the third, extending their lead to 3-1. But Coastal responded in the fourth. Dean Mihos led off with a single, and after a walk and a sacrifice bunt, Alexander launched his seventh home run of the season to left, giving the Chants a 5-3 lead.

Walker Mitchell scored on a sacrifice fly in the sixth to stretch Coastal's lead to 6-4, and Lynch entered with two on and two out in the seventh. The junior right-hander induced a strikeout to end the threat and closed the door with a pair of clean innings.

Dominick Carbone (3-0) picked up the win in relief of starter Jacob Morrison, who allowed four runs over 4.2 innings.
