No. 21 Baseball Opens Series With 4-1 Win Over Arkansas State

CONWAY, S.C. — Behind a career-long outing from Jacob Morrison and timely hitting from the middle of the order, No. 21 Coastal Carolina defeated Arkansas State 4-1 on Friday night at Springs Brooks Stadium.

Morrison (6-0) tossed a career-high eight innings, allowing just three hits and one earned run while striking out three. Perhaps most impressively, the right-hander did not issue a walk, marking the fifth consecutive game that Coastal's starting pitcher has gone without a free pass.

The Chanticleers (22-8, 7-3 Sun Belt) scored in three straight innings to build a comfortable lead, highlighted by a solo home run from designated hitter Domenico Tozzi in the third. Tozzi finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

Coastal added two runs in the fifth thanks to a sacrifice fly from Wells Sykes and an RBI single by Blake Barthol. An Arkansas State (13-16, 4-6) error in the sixth helped the Chants tack on an insurance run.

Morrison retired the side in order four times and faced just one over the minimum through the first 7.1 innings.

Dominick Carbone earned his third save of the season by retiring the Red Wolves in order after Morrison gave up a solo homer to Cason Campbell to open the ninth.

Coastal out-hit Arkansas State 8-3 and played error-free defense behind Morrison, who needed just 90 pitches—67 of them strikes—to get through eight innings.

  • Tozzi's Power Surge: He posted a three-hit game with his third home run of the season. It was his third multi-hit game of the 2025 campaign.
  • Defensive Consistency: The Chants turned in another clean sheet defensively and 12-1 when playing error-free ball.
  • Closer Consistency: Carbone has three saves in 11 appearances out of the pen. He has struck out 27 in 18.2 innings of work.
