Volleyball Falls To North Carolina In Four

CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina dropped a four-set match, 3-1 (25-23, 18-25, 16-25, 17-25) to North Carolina at the HTC Center on Sunday. 

Junior Jalyn Stout led Coastal (1-1) with 13 kills, 14 assists, and 12 digs for her second triple-double of the season and 36th of her career. Junior Ava Wallis posted 19 assists. 

UNC (2-0) had three players with double-digit kills. Safi Hampton led the way with 14 kills, while Haley Pearce and Chelsea Thorpe had 10 each. Zoe Berhardt distributed a match-high 20 assists, and Sienna Cozza handed out 14.
 

The Tar Heels hit .342 as a team while the Chanticleers hit .143. 
 
THE SYNPOSIS
• Coastal rushed out to an 8-3 lead in the opening set after opening it by scoring the first three points. The Tar Heels used a 9-4 run to take a one-point lead, but the Chanticleers reasserted themselves to take a three-point lead at 17-14 and never trailed again. Anzley Rinard forced a match point with a kill, and Stout and Anna Rita blocked Pearce's match-tying attempt for a 25-23 first set win. 
• UNC jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the second set, and the Chanticleers were never able to get closer than four points the remainder of the frame. The Tar Heels stretched their lead to seven, 18-11, on a kill by Hampton and won by that margin, 25-18. 
• The third set was close early on before North Carolina used a 9-3 run to take a commanding 21-14 advantage and recorded a 25-16 win.  
• The Chants trailed 6-5 early in the fourth set before the Tar Heels scored 15 of the next 18 points to take a 21-9 advantage. Bailee Earnhardt served four consecutive points to make it a seven-point match, 24-17, before an error ended the match. 
 
NOTES & STATS  
* The Chanticleers fell to 0-6 all-time against North Carolina, hosting the Tar Heels for the first time today. Each of the five previous meetings were in Chapel Hill. 
 • Kibi Huggins made her first start as a Chanticleer. 
• Earnhardt recorded a pair of service aces. 
 
NEXT MATCH 
Coastal returns action Wednesday, Sept. 3, against South Carolina at the HTC Center. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
