CLEMSON, S.C. – No. 15 Coastal Carolina scored eight unanswered runs over the final three innings to rally past Clemson, 11-9, on Tuesday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
Trailing 9-3 entering the seventh inning, the Chanticleers mounted a furious comeback, plating five runs in the frame to cut the deficit to one.
Coastal completed the comeback in the eighth inning, as Walker Mitchell executed a safety squeeze to score Cruz Harlan from third and tie the game at 9-9. Later in the inning, Rex Watson put the Chanticleers in front for good, reaching on a bobbled ball at second that allowed Dean Mihos to score and give Coastal a 10-9 lead.
The Chanticleers added an insurance run in the ninth inning when Blake Barthol delivered a sacrifice fly to extend the advantage to 11-9.
Watson and Mihos each recorded two hits to lead the Coastal offense. Watson's first hit of the night was a three-run home run in the opening inning, his eighth of the season.
On the mound, Darin Horn earned the win (3-0) with a dominant performance out of the bullpen, tossing three scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and one walk and striking out six.
With the victory, Coastal Carolina improves to 17-7 overall and remains 6-0 in Sun Belt Conference play. The win also marks the Chanticleers' third consecutive victory over Clemson, the first time in program history Coastal has achieved the feat.
The Chanticleers will return to conference play this weekend, traveling to Marshall for a three-game Sun Belt series beginning Friday.
