David Nguyen joined the Coastal Carolina volleyball coaching staff as an assistant coach on in February 2021.
In his lone season at CCU in 2021, Coastal opened up the fall season with an exhibition win at NC State before going 19-9 overall and 12-4 in Sun Belt Conference play. The Chants continued their domination under Forman on their home court, as CCU went 12-2 at home on the season with losses to Duke and Georgia Southern. The Chants reached the semifinals of the 2021 Sun Belt Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament, falling to the 2021 Sun Belt West Division Champions in Texas State.
The Chants once again led the Sun Belt Conference in hitting percentage (.252), second in service aces per set (1.66), and were third in kills per set (13.76). The defense led the Sun Belt in blocks per set (2.53) and allowed the fewest kills per set (11.39) on the season. In Sun Belt Conference play, Coastal ranked first in kills (820), first in assists (757), first in blocks (172.0), first in blocks per set (2.67), second in hitting percentage (.274), second in assists per set (12.62), second in kills per set (13.67), and third in both service aces (92) and service aces per set (1.53).
Four Chants picked up All-Sun Belt honors, as graduate transfer Cheyenne Jones was named the Sun Belt Conference Newcomer of the Year and earned second-team honors. Super senior Ani Bozdeva earned a spot on the All-Sun Belt first team for the second consecutive season, while fellow Chants Brigitta Petrenko and Doris Carter joined Jones on the second team.
Several Chants reached career milestones in 2021, as Carter, Bozdeva, and Jones all reached and surpassed the 1,000-career kills mark, while setters Petrenko and Marija Borcic each passed out their 2,000th-career assist. Defensive specialist Lina Perugini also reached a milestone, as she surpassed the 1,000-career digs mark in the season.Â
Nguyen came to Coastal Carolina after two seasons as an assistant coach at William & Mary from 2019-20.
Following his first season on staff in 2019, in which W&M recorded its most wins in a single season since 2016, Nguyen was instrumental in signing a 2020 class that earned honorable mention accolades by PrepVolleyball.com, which ranked the recruiting class as one of the top-100 nationally.
During the summer of 2019, Nguyen served as the USA Volleyball High Performance assistant coach for the Old Dominion Region's Girls Youth team.
Before joining the staff at W&M, Nguyen spent one season at the University of Virginia as the director of volleyball operations. During his time at UVA, Nguyen was directly responsible for video coordinating and statistical scouting reports. During matches, Nguyen was responsible for coding on DataVolley for live statistical feedback to the coaching staff. He was also the coordinator for all volleyball activities and budget management.

Nguyen was also given the role of camp director while at UVA due to his experiences coaching camps for UNC, VCU, and Coastal Carolina.
Prior to joining UVA, Nguyen spent four years on staff at VCU as a volunteer assistant. During his time with the Rams, he helped guide the program to an Atlantic 10 championship and an NCAA appearance in 2017. Nguyen helped the Rams to an RPI ranking of 35 in 2017 and 38 in 2013, with a record of 30-3 in his final season in 2017.
While at VCU, he was directly responsible for overseeing the team’s scouting, film, and statistical operations along with assisting in the training of the setters and outside hitters.

In addition to his time at UVA and VCU, Nguyen has experience in the club volleyball ranks. He served as a head coach for the CAVC 17U girls team and was also an assistant for the RVC 16U boys team.
Nguyen earned his Bachelor of Science in general mathematical sciences from VCU in 2018.
