Women's Basketball Fall To UNC Wilmington, 65-56 WILMINGTON, NC -- UNC Wilmington held Coastal Carolina to 32.8 percent shooting as the Seahawks defeated the Chanticleers, 65-56, in women's college basketball action Saturday at Trask Coliseum.
With the win, UNCW evens its record at 2-2 while Coastal Carolina falls
to 2-2.
Led by sophomore guard Jen Kapper's 17 points, UNCW placed three others in double digit scoring. Sophomore guard Jan Williams added 12 points, on four 3-pointers, and Tracy Morgan added 11 points and 10 rebounds off the bench in her first game back from hand surgery. Senior center Vickery Harper added 10 points and three steals for the Seahawks.
Sophomore guard Nikki Redick led the Chants with 18 points and five assists while sophomore guard Whitney Shearer added 14, 4-of-8 from 3-point range, and sophomore center Crystal Brown had 12 points before fouling out with 2:28 left in the game.
With 6:39 left, Morgan gave UNCW its biggest lead of the game, 57-38, with a lay up.
The Chants managed to cut their deficit to six, 62-56, when Shearer capped an 18-5 run with 48 seconds remaining. Kapper then put the game away by converting both ends of a one-and-one with 46 seconds left.
Coastal closed to within two, 14-12, following a pair of free throws by Nikki Redick with 9:30 left in the first half,but Jan Williams answered with a 3-pointer to trigger a 9-0 run to give UNCW a 23-12 lead.
The Seahawks return to action Dec. 5 when they open a four-game road swing with a 7 p.m. start at High Point. The Chants retake the court Dec.7 at James Madison in a 7 p.m. tip-off.
