Women's Basketball Defeated By Charleston Southern, 48-35

    


CHARLESTON, S.C. —
The Charleston Southern University Lady Buccaneers defeated the Coastal Carolina Lady Chanticleers, 48-35 Saturday night at the CSU Fieldhouse, improving to 9-8 overall and 4-3 in the Big South Conference.

Junior guard Katie LaRue scored 13 points and Erin Jedlikowski added eight, while the Lady Bucs forced 23 turnovers.

Coastal Carolina was led by Courtney Brown`s 15 points. Nikki Reddick, the leading scorer in the Big South Conference, was held to only 10 points on four-of-15 shooting. Coastal Carolina falls to 6-12 overall, 2-5 in the Big South.

Despite trailing 20-18 at halftime, the Lady Buccaneers went on a 13-2 run midway through the second half to take control of the contest and held on for the win.

A strong defensive effort in the game keyed the Lady Buccaneer victory as junior guard Marea Daniels had five steals in the contest, while senior forward Ces Champagne added three steals in the win.

Also contributing in the win were senior forward Eboni Littlejohn and sophomore forward Marta Losonczy, who had nine and six rebounds, respectively. CSU won the battle of the boards, 36-38, including a 15-4 edge on the offensive glass.

Physical play and poor shooting highlighted the first half of play for both teams as the Lady Buccaneers shot only 24.1 percent from the field. Coastal Carolina was not much better, shooting 31.8 percent from the field.

In the second half, the teams traded baskets early, with CSU taking a 25-24 lead with 16:45 left in the game. It was then that the Lady Buccaneers went on a 13-2 run to take control of the contest. Coastal Carolina managed just nine points in the first 12 minutes of the second-half.
