Coastal Carolina Sweeps Appalachian State CONWAY, S.C. — Coastal Carolina scored a tough 3-2 victory in the opener before cruising to an 8-0 five-inning game in the nightcap for softball sweep over Appalachian State on Tuesday at Lady Chants Field.
Appalachian State (3-12) held a 2-0 lead in game one before Danielle Jenkins' two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning knotted the score. The score remained tied into the seventh when Coastal's Karlye Fortune laced an infield single off third baseman's Laura Amarell's glove to plate Lauren Yates for the victory.
Yates (2-0), who was 1-for-3 with a run scored at the plate, won her second consecutive outing by scattering seven hits over seven innings. Jordan Arnold (2-4) took the loss for Appalachian State, allowing nine hits and walking three while striking out four.
Coastal jumped out early in game two by plating three runs on five hits in the first inning. Fortune's two-RBI double with one out opened the scoring and she then came around to score on Jenkins' single later in the inning.
The final five runs came in the fifth inning as Appalachian State did not record an out. After the Lady Chanticleers loaded the bases, pitcher Stephanie Belden helped to end the game early by clearing the bases with her second career home run. Kimberly Josephson, who had reached on a single and stole second, scored for the NCAA eight-run rule to become in effect on a wild pitch by reliever Heather Bradbury.
Belden (1-2) earned her first win of the season by allowing just one hit over five innings of work. Lael Rorie (0-4) , the first of four pitchers used by the Mountaineers in game two, allowed six hits and three runs in just one inning.
Coastal's Kelli Julg went 4-for-4 on the day with two runs scored, while Jenkins batting average took a big jump with her combined game statistics of 4-for-4 with a pair of runs and three RBI.
Coastal will host Appalachian State again on Wednesday in a doubleheader at Lady Chants field at 2:00 p.m. The second game of the doubleheader can be heard live on the Chanticleers' athletic web site beginning at approximately 4:30 p.m.
