Coastal Carolina Earns Second Sweep Over Appalachian State

CONWAY, S.C. — For the second consecutive day, Coastal Carolina University scored a doubleheader sweep in softball action against Appalachian State at Lady Chants Field. Coastal scored a 5-4 extra inning victory in game one and then held on for a 5-3 win in the nightcap.

In the opener, Coastal (8-7) scored the come-from-behind victory in eight innings on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Amanda DeGrendle. Danielle Jenkins (3-1) earned the victory for Coastal, scattering 11 hits and allowing just one earned run in eight innings. Jordan Arnold (2-5) took the loss for the Mountaineers as she gave up eight hits and three walks while striking out three.

The Lady Chanticleers took a one-run lead in the top of the second inning on a one-out, RBI double to right-center by Jennifer Schmidt. Appalachian State tied the game in the top of the third on an infield single by Laura Amarell.

The Mountaineers (3-15) took a 4-1 advantage in the fifth inning on three unearned runs. Kelly Doss delivered the big hit in the inning, a two-run single with one out. Coastal tied the game in the bottom of that same inning as Kelly Julg and Karlye Fortune delivered back-to-back RBI singles.

CCU freshman Alexandra Prattes had her best game offensively with a 3-for-4 performance in the opener, while Julg went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI. Lael Rorie led Appalachian State by going 3-for-5 with two runs scored.

Coastal scored early in game two, using three hits to plate four runs in the second inning. Jenkins scored the first run of the game when she came home on a throwing error by ASU starting pitcher Heather Bradbury after an infield single by Prattes. Stephanie Belden connected on an RBI single before Amanda DeGrendele's full-count double to the fence in left-center plated two. Appalachian State rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to close the gap.
