CCU, UNC Wilmington Split Doubleheader WILMINGTON, N.C. — Senior righthander Stephanie Belden pitched 2 1/3 innings of hitless ball to lift visiting Coastal Carolina to a 4-3 victory over host UNC Wilmington in the nightcap of a doubleheader Wednesday at Boseman Field. The Seahawks won the opener, 3-1, as freshman righty Amanda Wilson scattered five hits in going the distance.
The Seahawks now stand 13-20 heading into a weekend doubleheader at home against Southern Conference rival Appalachian State. The Chanticleers own a 15-14 record following the split.
Rookie outfielder Summer Chriscoe paced the Seahawks at the plate in the two games, going a combined 2-for-6 and scoring once. For Coastal Carolina, junior shortstop Kelli Julg and junior second baseman Holly Lee each went 3-for-7 and scored once.
In the opener, Coastal Carolina took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning before the Seahawks rallied with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and one more in the sixth to halt an 11-game slide. In the fifth, junior outfielder Mary Susan Hilliard ripped an RBI double to score Jamie Gostyla and Chriscoe delivered an RBI single to plate Kacie Jacobs.
Wilson evened her record at 3-3 on the season by allowing one unearned run on five hits, walking two and fanning four. Senior righthander Lauren Yates took the loss, falling to 4-4 after giving up three earned runs on six hits, walking two and striking out five.
In the second contest, the Chanticleers scored three runs in the top of the third to grab a 3-1 lead before the Seahawks answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fifth to knot the score at 3-all. In the decisive seventh, junior outfielder Kimberly Josephson tripled over the head of Hilliard in left and Julg drilled the game-winning single through
the box to collect the split.
Belden picked up the win in the nightcap, improving to 5-4 by walking one and striking out one in the relief outing. Gostyla dipped to 5-9 after working six innings and allowing four runs on eight hits.
