Men's Basketball Dominates High Point 98-76

CONWAY, S.C. — Coastal Carolina University won its sixth game in its last eight outings in grand fashion with a 98-76 Big South Conference men's basketball victory on Homecoming Weekend in Kimbel Arena. The Chanticleers improve to 8-15 overall and 5-6 in the Big South, while High Points falls to 8-16 overall and 4-7 in Conference action.
The game did not begin the way it ended as both squads battled through the first 11 minutes of action. Coastal Carolina held small leads through much of the opening minutes and High Point had its only lead if the game during this stretch, a two-point advantage for 22 seconds. Leading 27-24 with 8:41 remaining in the opening half, Coastal went on a 14-2 run over the next 5:21 to take a 41-26 advantage. Brandon Newby capped the run with his first of three consecutive treys for the Chanticleers. Coastal went on to hold a 49-35 lead heading into the locker room.
The Chanticleers continued to build the lead in the second half and erased any question of which team would walk away victorious with a 21-6 run that opened the Chants largest lead of 33 points at 80-47 with 11:55 to play. Coastal Carolina Head Coach Pete Strickland pulled his starters from the game with 5:17 remaining as the Chants cruised to the victory.
Derrick Robinson led four Chanticleers in double figures with 21 points, while Antonio Darden added 17 points and Justin Burton and Brandon Newby added 15 points and 14 points, respectively. Darden added nine rebounds to lead Coastal on the glass. Green and Burton each passed for career-highs as Green recorded 10 assists and Burton handed out nine. The Chanticleers burned the nets for a 57.4 shooting percentage and posted 22 assists against just 10 turnovers.
Steven Cornette and Brent Halsch each netted 12 points to lead High Point, while Dustin Van Weerdhuizen and John Stonehocker led the way on the glass with six rebounds each.
Coastal Carolina will travel to Birmingham, Alabama, to face Birmingham-Southern College on Monday at 8:00 p.m. (EST).
