BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team (12-7, 4-1 Big South) used a .252 hitting percentage and sophomore Katherine Jensen’s (Vancouver, B.C./Sentinel Secondary) 13th double-double to defeat Birmingham-Southern College (8-9, 2-3 Big South) in three games Oct. 12 in Birmingham, Ala. Coastal defeated the Panthers 30-21, 30-27 and 30-19. Coastal has now won eight of its last nine matches.

Coastal hit .297 in the first game to win 30-21. The key in the opening game was a 6-0 run that was led by sophomore Jennifer Hampton’s (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) serves. Game two was tied as late as 22-all after Coastal was down by as many as seven. The Lady Chants forced BSC into seven hitting errors in taking game two. Coastal then hit .361 to easily take the final game 30-17.

Jensen had 14 kills and 15 digs while hitting .273. Freshman Kristin Rinne (Fountain Hills, Ariz./Fountain Hills) and Hampton had 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Hampton also had 32 assists.

With the win, Coastal is now a half-a-game behind Winthrop University for second place in the Big South Conference. Coastal also moves to 9-6 in three-game matches.

Cassie Reed and Danielle Graff had 11 kills to lead Birmingham-Southern.

The Lady Chants head to Asheville, N.C., to face the University of North Carolina at Asheville Saturday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m.
