Football Falls to VMI 19-10 on Homecoming

CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina football team scored 10 points in the first half, but wouldn't find the end zone again in Saturday's game against VMI, losing 19-10 in its first-ever Homecoming game.

Coastal capitalized on a VMI fumble and got on the board first with 3:49 left to play in the first quarter as Aundres Perkins ran 11 yards, putting the Chants up 6-0. Coastal would score once more, with 13:38 left in the second quarter, on a 42-yard field goal by Josh Hoke, but the Keydets took over from there.

Only 50 seconds after Hoke's field goal, Gary Price caught a 35-yard pass from Jonathan Wilson, putting VMI on the board and beginning the Keydets' 19-point run. The rest of VMI's points would not come from touchdowns, however, but from field goals. Matt Sharpe sailed a 45-yarder through the goal posts with 9:28 left in the second quarter, and then made a 53-yard kick with 1:14 left, putting VMI up 13-10.

Sharpe recorded the rest of the Keydets' points, kicking two more field goals in the second half. His third try went 25 yards with 9:13 left in the third quarter, and VMI's final scoring drive ended in a 31-yard field goal with 6:56 left in the fourth quarter.

VMI only slightly outrushed the Chanticleers, amassing 167 versus CCU's 150, led by Sean Mizzer's 139 yards. Perkins led Coastal with 52, but left the game in the third quarter as a result of an injury. Tyler Thigpen also rushed for 49 yards.

The passing game was unbalanced between the squads, as VMI passed for 211 yards, while the Chants totaled only 77. Wilson completed 14 of 23 attempts with a touchdown and an interception, while Thigpen was successful on nine of 20 passes, also with one interception.

The Chanticleers wrapped up their home schedule with Saturday's game, and play their next three dates on the road. The squad travels to take on Davidson next, Saturday, Nov. 8, at 1 p.m.
