Baseball's Carter Named to NCBWA All-American Third Team

CONWAY, SC —Senior righthanded pitcher Steven Carter (Windsor, Ontario/St. Anne’s) was named to the 2004 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Preseason All-American Third Team, the organization announced today (Nov. 11).

Carter went 11-3 in 20 appearances last season. He had a 4.06 earned-run-average and two complete games in being named to the All-Big South second team. Carter struck out 110 batters, while walking only 33. Carter threw a complete game against Charleston Southern University in the first round of the Big South Tournament, striking out seven while giving up only two earned runs. He then came back and pitched seven innings against Liberty University on his way to being named the tournament Most Valuable Player. He struck out nine batters in a game three times last year, including in the NCAA Regionals in Lincoln, Neb., against Eastern Michigan University.

A 2002 First Team All-Big South selection, Carter has 273 career strikeouts, which is fifth on the career list.

Carter becomes the first Chanticleer named to the NCBWA preseason team since Justin Owens was selected to the third team in 2002.

Coastal Carolina opens the 2004 baseball season Saturday, Feb. 7, against Delaware State University at 1 p.m., in Charles Watson Stadium.
