Men's Tennis Competes in UTC Baras Fall Classic CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The Coastal Carolina University men’s and women’s tennis teams opened the fall portion of their schedule at the UTC Baras Fall Classic, and the Chanticleers had many high finishes.
The doubles combination of senior Medina Bajrambasic (Zewica, Bosnia) and junior Marie Matrka (Wilmington, Ohio) won the Women’s A doubles division by winning four matches. The top seeds defeated UT-Chattanooga’s Catherine Allen and Bethany Everett 8-2 in the round of 16, Glenny Cepeda and Carolina de Altube of Shorter 8-3 in the quarterfinals and Charlotte’s Ashleigh Murray and Laura Swain 9-7 in the semifinals. That set up a matchup against Toledo’s Myriam Cueva and Eunice Paravicini in the finals, which Bajrambasic and Matrka won 8-3.
On the singles side, sophomore Petra Jantti (Haukiverkko Espo, Finland) advanced to the finals of the Women’s B singles before falling to Toledo’s Cueva 6-3, 6-0. Jantti won four matches in the tournament, including a 6-2, 6-7, 1-0 win over Charlotte’s Lindsey Morris in the semifinals. Junior Stephanie Koot (Straat Van Mozambique Amstelveen, The Netherlands) made it to the semifinals in the Women’s C singles before falling to UAB’s Nadia Dellarciprete 6-3, 7-5.
For the men, freshman Darko Fridl (Zagreb, Croatia) advanced to the semifinals of the Men’s C singles, winning three matches before falling to Tennessee Tech’s Chris Lerch 6-1, 6-2. Freshman Richard Redding (Winscombe, England) lost his first match in the Men’s B singles, but rallied to win the next two in the consolation round before falling to Diego Fernandes of Chattanooga 7-5, 6-1.
The Coastal Carolina men’s tennis team hosts the CCU Invitational Oct. 3-4, while the women head to Raleigh, N.C., for the Residence Inn North Wolfpack Invitational Oct. 4-5.
