Women's Tennis Has Success at North Carolina State More Information:
The Coastal Carolina University women’s tennis team participated in the Residence Inn North Wolfpack Invitational Oct. 15-17 in Raleigh, N.C., and had a singles champion and two other finalists.
Sophomore Sarize Coetzee (Bloemfontein, South Africa/Texas Tech) won the C2 singles draw, defeating Kristin Ikard of Western Carolina 6-2, 6-1 in the finals. Coetzee had four wins in the tournament, all in straight sets. Junior Petra Jantti (Haukiverkko Espo, Finland/Tapiolan Lukio) went to the finals of the B2 draw, defeating Whitney Miles of UNC Greensboro 7-6(2), 6-1 and Elizabeth Kemodle of Elon 6-3, 6-1. She fell to Virginia Romero of N.C. State 2-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2 in the final. In A1 singles, senior Marie Matrka (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington) fell in her first match 6-4, 6-1 to Anastasia Kugakalova of Mississippi State, but won all three of her consolation matches, including a 6-3, 6-2 win over Jonita Randolph of Liberty in the consolation semifinals.
Senior Virignie Dinh (Maisons Albert, France/Sophia) defeated Renee Joseph of Mississippi State in the first round of the B1 draw 4-6, 6-2, 10-4, but fell to Charlotte’s Kathy Robey 6-1, 4-6, 10-4 in the quarterfinals. In the C1 draw, sophomore Nicole Lemmerer (Bad Mitterndorf, Austria/Borg Bad Aussee) won her first match, 6-1, 6-3 over Katie Carlson of UNC Wilmington, but fell to Kim Whelan of Davidson 6-4, 6-4. Junior Rosemary Younger (Atlanta, Ga./Marist) won her first match at the D1 singles 7-5, 7-5 over A. Heard of Charleston Southern, but fell 6-4, 6-1 to Ana Martin of UNC Greensboro.
In the doubles, Matrka and Dinh advanced to the finals of the A1 doubles draw. They defeated Rekasi and Kugakolova of Mississippi State 9-8, Buchanan and Gol of East Carolina 9-8 and Olney and Romero of N.C. State 8-2. They fell to the team of Fodor and Rudman of Mississippi State 8-4 in the final. Jantti and Coetzee made it to the semifinals of the B1 draw, before falling to Levitt and Whelan of Davidson 8-6.
Coastal will head to Winston-Salem, N.C., to compete in the ITA Southeast Regional Oct. 22-24.
