MYRTLE BEACH , SC —The Coastal Carolina University baseball team (7-3) split in action on the final day of the Baseball at the Beach Tournament Feb. 29 at Coastal Federal Field in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Chants defeated Ohio State University 8-4 on the strength of 10 hits and strong pitching. Then, the Richmond tandem of Derek Duclos and Matt McLoughlin no-hit Coastal Carolina 2-0.
Against Ohio State, the Chants scored six runs in the first three innings to take a 6-0 lead. Run-scoring singles from sophomore Mike Costanzo (Springfield, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) and junior Jason Krohn (Gresham, Ore./Lower Columbia College) gave the Chants a two-run first inning. The centerfielder and rightfielder collided, scoring all three unearned runs.
Coastal scored on a Krohn RBI in the fourth before the Buckeyes answered with three in the fifth. Ohio State added a run in the seventh and were looking for more before senior Steven Carter (Windsor, Ontario/St. Anne’s) came out for his first appearance since Feb. 13. Carter struck out Steve Caravati to end the threat. Coastal then put one more up on the board with a leadoff home run from senior Greg Orsimarsi (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Socastee) in the eighth.
