Campbell Wins Hammer Throw at Sea Ray Relays With New School Record

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Coastal Carolina senior Amber Campbell (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) continued her impressive outdoor season Friday, winning the hammer throw of the Sea Ray Relays at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn. She set a new personal best and school record with her 66.49m/218'1" throw.

Campbell is currently first on the Big South Conference and performance list and was second in the East Region and third in the nation before her Friday performance. The national leader is Loree Smith of Colorado State with 67.05m/219'11".

Campbell, a five-time All-American, set a new indoor record this past season in the weight throw at the USA Track and Field Championships. She placed third overall and first among collegians, beating six-time US champion and two-time Olympian Dawn Ellerbe, throwing 22.24m/72'11.75". With that throw, she set a new American Collegiate record, previously set by Erin Gilreath of Florida in 2003.

Campbell and the rest of the CCU outdoor track and field squad travel to Charleston, S.C. next weekend for the 2004 Big South Outdoor Championships, Thursday April 15 through Saturday April 17, on the campus of Charleston Southern University.
