Box Score Baseball Shuts Out Radford 12-0
RADFORD, Va. – The Coastal Carolina University baseball team (22-11, 5-5 Big South) shut out the opposition for the first time this season as senior Steven Carter (Windsor, Ontario/St. Anne’s) tied Coastal’s all-time wins record in a 12-0 win over Radford University (15-15, 7-3 Big South) April 16, in Radford, Va. It was Coastal’s first shutout since the 10-0 victory over Liberty in the 2003 Big South Tournament championship game.
Carter went eight innings, allowing only three hits, no runs or walks and struck out nine Highlanders. It is the third time in Big South play that Carter has gone at least eight innings. It was Carter’s 36th career victory in a Coastal uniform, tying Scott Sturkie in the victory column.
The Chants had a golden opportunity in the top of the first to score, as Radford starter Justin Tubb walked four Chants, but the Highlanders got out of the jam, forcing junior Jason Krohn (Gresham, Ore./Lower Columbia College) to ground out with the bases loaded. Coastal broke through in the top of the third when after walks to sophomore Michael DeJesus (Manapalan, N.J./East Carolina) and junior Brett Grandstrand (Newcastle, Wash./Liberty), freshman Chris Raber (Coplay, Pa./Whitehall) drove them both in with a single to right field.
Coastal came through with two big runs in the sixth. Sophomore Mike Costanzo (Springfield, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) opened the inning with a single up the middle. Krohn and junior Jon Foisy (Ridgecrest, Calif./Cerro Coso C.C.) were hit by pitch, loading the bases. Senior Chad Oxendine (Rowland, N.C./Avalon Academy) came through with two outs as he singled to left field, scoring Costanzo and Krohn. The Chants added a run in the seventh as junior Brett Gordon (Sonora, Calif./Merced J.C.) scored Raber with a single to right.
Oxendine came through again in the eighth with his second home run of the season, a blast to left field. Senior Ryan McGraw (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic Central) then hit a shot to right center that was inches away from going out and McGraw easily went into third. McGraw scored on an RBI single from Grandstrand, giving Coastal a 7-0 lead. Freshman Derek Martin (Barnwell, S.C./Barnwell) then drove in Grandstrand with a knock to left field.
Coastal scored four in the ninth, sending nine to the plate for the second straight inning. DeJesus and Grandstrand had back-to-back RBI singles. Sophomore Adam Pernasilici (Tecumseh, Ontario/St. Anne’s) and Raber made the score 11-0 with RBI singles. Sophomore Zach Baldwin (Barboursville, W. Va./Cabell Midland) perserved the shutout with a scoreless ninth, striking out one.
Coastal had five players with two hits apiece, including McGraw with a double and triple. Oxendine drove in three runs, including the two-run home run. Grandstrand extended his hitting streak to 12 games, the highest by a Chant this season.
Coastal and Radford continue their Big South set Saturday, April 17, at 1 p.m., in Radford, Va.
