Coastal Arms Shine, But UNCW Walk-Off Spoils Effort

WILMINGTON, N.C. — UNCW pushed across two runs in the bottom of the ninth to walk off No. 9 Coastal Carolina, 2-1, Tuesday night at Brooks Field.

UNCW (22-18) strung together four consecutive singles to open the ninth, tying the game and loading the bases with no outs. Trevor Lucas then scored the winning run on a chopper to first base.

CCU freshman right-hander Jackson Smallets delivered one of his best outings of the season, tossing a season-high 6 1/3 scoreless innings. He allowed just three hits, did not walk a batter and struck out five, keeping UNCW off balance throughout his start.

Case Bosch followed out of the bullpen and was equally effective, retiring both batters he faced while striking out one to maintain the shutout into the late innings.

Ryan Lynch also turned in a solid relief outing, allowing just one hit and striking out two to keep Coastal in position down the stretch. Smallets, Bosch and Lynch combined to retire 17 consecutive batters before Lynch yielded a two-out single. The trio combined for eight shutout innings with eight strikeouts and no walks.

Darin Horn (5-1) was charged with the loss after surrendering two runs on four hits in the ninth. Brady Thompson (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless ninth.

Offensively, the Chanticleers (28-12) were limited to one hit, a solo home run by Jordan Taylor in the second inning that accounted for Coastal's only run of the night.

Coastal Carolina returns to Sun Belt Conference play with a three-game series at Spring Brooks Stadium against Texas State beginning Friday, April 24. The first pitch is set for 6 p.m.
