More Information:

The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (4-4-1, 0-0-1 Big South) and UNC Asheville (1-4-1, 0-0-1 Big South) opened their Big South Conference schedules with a 1-1 tie Sept. 18 at the CCU Soccer Field in Conway, S.C.

The first 45 minutes were scoreless with the Lady Chants owning a 5-2 shot advantage. Sophomore Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) had one save off the foot of UNCA’s Shoshana Fried. Coastal had two shots on goal from junior Kristina Fisher (Landenburg, Pa./Avon Grove) and junior Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales), but both were saved by Michelle Mattos.

Coastal broke the tie in the first seconds of the second half as Parsons scored her fourth goal of the season off a pass from senior Leah Barrett (LaPlata, Md./LaPlata) at 45:18. Coastal had another great chance to score at 78:14, but junior Rachel Devine’s (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) shot hit the right post. The Bulldogs scored the equalizer at 81:42 when Brita Nordgren collected a loose ball and put in the net for her third goal of the year. The Lady Chants had one more shot on goal before the overtime period started.

Coastal had all of the shots on goal in the overtimes as Parsons and sophomore Laura Weiler (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) had good looks, but Mattos made saves to keep the game tied. The best chance probably came in the second overtime when Weiler had the goalie out of position at 104:50 but a Bulldog defender made the save on the ball.

Coastal had 20 shots, six in the overtimes, compared to 11 for Asheville. Asheville had a 5-4 corner-kick advantage on the Lady Chants, while CCU committed 11 fouls to UNCA’s eight.

Stoll had four saves on the night, while Mattos came up with nine saves for the Bulldogs. Parsons ended the game with eight shots, five on goals. Leading the Bulldogs in shots was Morgen Priest with three.

Coastal ends the homestand Wednesday, Sept. 22, against Liberty. Kickoff is at 3 p.m.
