Men's Golf Finishes Second at Raines Development Group Intercollegiate

Three Chants Tie For Sixth In the Opening Event of the Year

FLORENCE, S.C. – Coastal Carolina's men's golf squad improved for the second straight round but just fell short, finishing second at the 20th-annual Raines Development Group Intercollegiate Golf Tournament in Florence. The Chanticleers finished with a three-round total of 896, five shots behind champion Virginia Commonwealth who shot a final round six-under 282 to end at 891. The 54-hole event was hosted by Francis Marion University on the par 72, 7,062-yard Country Club of South Carolina course. 

Coastal started the day three shots behind second-round leader Charleston Southern University heading in Tuesday’s action.  While the Chants bypassed their conference rival, the Rams were lights out in the final round, sparked by a 68 and a pair of 69s.

Charleston Southern and Davidson College tied for third place at 907, followed by Charlotte (909), Campbell University and Francis Marion tied for sixth (913), Georgia College & State University (914), Jacksonville University (916), East Carolina University and Belmont Abbey College tied for 10th (919), Old Dominion University (922), and Kennesaw State University (932).

Coastal was paced by Jeremy Kirkland and Dustin Johnson, who tied for sixth at 222. Local product Zack Byrd tied for 15th in his first collegiate event, finishing at 225, including a team-best two-under 70 in the final round. Christian Smith, playing as an individual for Coastal, placed 14th at 224. Other CCU individuals Brad Robinson and Lindsay Renolds also made a mark in their first collegiate tournament. Robinson tied for sixth with his teammates at 222, while Renolds tied for 32nd at 230.

 

The Raines Development Group is a family-owned business that owns and operates two Florence hotels: Springhill Suites by Marriott and Courtyard by Marriott, both located at the intersection of I-95 and I-20 near the Florence Civic Center.
