Women's Tennis Opens Conference Season This Week

The Coastal Carolina women’s tennis team (5-2) has three matches this week, coming off a four-match road trip. The Lady Chanticleers host the College of Charleston Wednesday, March 2, at 4 p.m. This is a make up from the Feb. 20 match that was cancelled due to rain. Coastal then travels to Birmingham, Ala., for two matches, playing at UAB Friday,, March 4, at 2 p.m., and opening the BIg South schedule at Birmingham-Southern Saturday, March 5, at 11 a.m.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: The College of Charleston (2-2) gave South Carolina State its first loss of the season with a 4-3 decision. Gabriella Moreira won at number-one singles with a 6-1, 6-3 victory.
UAB (5-3) moved to 2-1 in Conference USA with a 5-2 win over Memphis Feb. 27. The Blazers swept all three doubles matches and took the last four in singles play. Ornischa Maier-Knapp clinched the victory with a 62, 1-6, 6-4 victory.
Birmingham-Southern (3-4, 1-0 Big South) opened its conference slate with a 7-0 victory over Radford. At number-one singles, Jennifer Williams defeated Radford Daniella Milano 6-0, 6-1. The Panthers won all six singles matches in straight sets.
HEAD COACH JODY DAVIS: Jody Davis (Coastal Carolina ’84) enters his ninth season as head coach of the Coastal Carolina women’s tennis program. Davis has an impressive 116-48 record with the women’s squad, including coaching five Big South Conference Players of the Year (including Medina Bajrambasic in 2004), three Big South Rookies of the Year and 24 All-Conference team members, including Bajrambasic and Marie Matrka last season.
MATRKA MOVING UP WINS CHART: Senior Marie Matrka (Wilmington, Ohio) starts her senior season ranked third in all-time singles wins (80) and fourth in all-time doubles wins (80) at Coastal. The 2004 Third Team Academic All-America selection trails Emma Kidd (114) and Medina Bajrambasic (105) in singles wins.
DINH ON A ROLL: Senior Virginie Dinh (Maisons Albert, France) moved to 6-0 on the year in singles play with a 7-6, 6-2 win over North Carolina State’s Elin Stahl Johansson Feb. 27. Dinh has won five straight matches in straight sets and has teammed up with senior Marie Matrka to go 5-2 in doubles play.
UP NEXT: Coastal hosts Charlotte March 8 at 2 p.m., in the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.
